Edifier R1280DBs Vs Audioengine A1 - Worth Paying $100 More for Audioengine?

I'm looking for some new desktop speakers to replace the crackly Edifier R980T that I got a few months back. I realise now that I shouldn't have gone quite so cheap before.

I'm not an audiophile by any means, just need some decent speakers for gaming and video editing (I rarely do audio mixing myself, so no need to go high-end at this stage). I noticed both the Edifier R1280DBs and the Audioengine A1 are both on decent discount through Amazon for Black Friday, and both seem to have pretty good reviews for the price range. But the Audioengine ones are 100 bucks more expensive. Is it worth paying for better sound?

Both of them have a subwoofer connection if I feel the need to expand the setup later on. The Edifiers are slightly bigger so the Audioengines have that going for them as they'll be sitting on my desk. But it seems really it comes down to sound quality, and whether the Audioengines will give me significantly better audio than the Edifiers.

  • The R1280s are remarkable for the price/performance. Always has been for Edifier. I feel like unless you want to step up and pay more, the A1 is probably not worth it at that price range.

    • Went ahead and ordered one, thanks!

  • love the 1380s for the price
