Best Way to Install Rear Speakers from Q990b Soundbar?

As the title says.

Recently got the Samsung q990b soundbar plus sub and satellites.

Currently trying to figure out the best way to place the rear speakers.

Is it best to get a stand (if so, which one)?

Wall mount?

Other option?

Please let me know in the comments what you've done if you have done this sort of thing before. This is my first sound system of any sort so I'm pretty new.

Thanks 😊

  • place them on boxes, etc like you would a stand and test if you like that placement

    • That's a decent idea!

We may not have the room for boxes though 😒

      • doesn't have to be boxes, just something that will hold the speakers at your intended height

don't forget the rears need power so you have to work out how you're going to run that (whether you use stands or wall mounts). and also the q990's rears have those upwards firing speakers for the atmos

  • For me stands took up too much space and I had to take care to avoid knocking them over. Got these wall mounts https://www.melbournehifi.com.au/products/vogels-vlb-500-spe…
Also, the speakers are powered so this way there's no annoying cables along the floor.

    • I was looking specifically at these mounts as an option for considering wall mounting.

How do you find their swivel range? For example, could I mount these on a wall so that the speakers were facing 90° forward from the side walls?

And also how hard are they to mount to a wall?

  • Also for people who say stands, what's the best option to go with for that?

Saw a ~$40 stand on Amazon but considering it's competition is in the ~$300 range it makes me doubtful of its quality

If you’re not opposed to second hand look for second hand stands. They’re a fraction of the price

Also wall mount vs stands depends on the size of your room. If your wall is far away from The couch / sitting area it will sound weird when it all comes together (assuming home cinema). You want your rears to be close to you but not right on top of you.

    • i found some pot plant stands that worked… you can also use stuff like to make sure the speakers don't fall off the stand if it gets bumped https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00P4S2OTS

The q990b has small rears though so you shouldn't have too much trouble, for my other surround setup with larger surrounds I'm using velcro straps like this to attach them to stands https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001599171585.html

For one of my q990s i'm using stands then running the power under the couch that's between them to a power point, just so the cord is out of the way and not a trip hazard

      • Our couches are against a wall so the cord thing isn't an issue

What potplant stands did you find?

        • just some at an op shop that were the exact right height for the speakers when seated

          • @bdl: Excuse my nooby questions, but what is the 'exact' right height for them?

I've seen a bit of variance about whether it should be above, below or level with ears?

            • @Ninternet: I tend to aim for level as there's going to be different heights of ears when different-heighted people are seated.

I'm also a strong proponent of place there where you subjectively feel like they sound best - that's why I suggested temporarily putting them on boxes and playing around with height and location to get a feel of what you (and whoever you're watching tv with) likes best.

  • Edit: commented in wrong section

  • If you have the effort to wall mount i'd consider going down a full amplified system.
If it's a soundbar and rear speakers maybe just chuck em on stands.

  • This is a useless comment for OP, but when I got the same set of speakers, they replaced some floor standing speakers (because you can't add external speakers to the sound bar set).

Faced with the same challenge as OP, I simply repurposed the floorstanding speakers to be the stands for the new satellites.

If you are using a stand, use blue tack so that the speaker will stick to the stand and won't fall.

    • Thanks for the tip 👍

  • Can anyone recommend a good pair of stand that doesn’t break the bank 😅
