How Often Do You Need to Service The Air Conditioner

I have air conditioner in spare room which we literally not use for 7-8 years. It hasn't been used that much prior.

Just wondering how does air conditioner servicing work and what frequency do you be to get it done?

I'm guessing for improved air quality we need to at least do it once now since it has been dormant for years.

What do you guys think?

Landlord sends someone out every year to service unit and replace air filters in my apartment. Takes about 20 mins tops.

I don't think you can get Legionella in modern air conditioning units but could still have a build up of other bacteria causing diseases and infections.

Call local companies tomorrow for quotes.

Just clean the filters and give it a good vacuum to minimise dust egress when you first turn it on.

If it doesn't work or seems to be struggling then I would call a service technician.

    • Thanks

  • Check youtube for DIY air con cleaning for the model and brand you have.

A service tech would love to heard that you have not….., sorry meant to say the tech heard "I have a stuffed air con and need it replaced as I have no idea and will pay through the nose"….

I just open the lid, remove the filters, take them outside and brush them off, then stick them back in.

As everyone else has said, 'servicing' is just a fancy word for cleaning. They'll mostly just vacuum the filters and clean leaves away from the bits outside the house. If you're willing to clean the filters and brush away leaves yourself, unless you've noticed some kind of problem, paying for a service is largely a waste of money.

    • Thanks. I'll do this. I'll watch the YouTube videos

  • I clean my air conditioning filters myself, however I had to pay someone to come and re-gas it.
Cost me $600 to refill the gas on two units.

If you need to re-gas your home aircond, you have a leak somewhere.

home airconds should never need regassing if you don't have a leak.

      • Thanks for this. X

  • Do AC units (with a compressor unit in the balcony) need any parts replacements in a set amount of time? We've been living in our apartment for almost 4 years and the REA/landlord have never sent anyone to take a look at the AC, lol.

Came from overseas and we had our AC unit (window type though) cleaned annually, although I do come from a hote climate (SEA) and use the AC daily, whereas we rarely use ours here.
