Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) - Tax Invoice (without Middle Name)

Hi Guys,
Just curious, for items cost under $500 ( >$300 of course), do they expect to match the name as per passport?
Eg : Passport has Mr X Y Z , where "Y" is middle name and is part of the "Firstname = Mr X Y" but the tax invoice is on name "Mr X Z"
Does that work or claim at TRS will be rejected? TIA

  • It's fine. My full name has never even fit on any official form regarding air travel other than my passport application form.

  • It's been a while since I've done this. But all I can remember is that I have never ever given my middle name for any online or in-store purchases. I've been able to claim TRS without issue heaps of times in the past.

  • Middle name doesn't matter. Mr X Z is still Mr X Y Z. I've never had a problem and countless claims.

  • Thanks guys, the middle name in my case is part of "Firstname" in passport and that's why I am little confused.

  • And here be me - Forgot to ask for my name on the receipt. When asked after the fact, JB HiFi said no luck. Fair enough as that was on me.

My question to the community - Has anyone claimed TRS without a name on the receipt?

    • +1

Yes, name on tax invoice / receipts is not necessary for less than $1,000.

Extract from TRS page on ABF’s website

Get a valid paper tax invoice in English with:
your name (and only your name) as it appears in your passport if the invoice is $1,000 or more

      • Unfortunately over $1000. :-(

  • Hi Guys, a side question,
For TRS claim we need spend at least AUD 300, (including Goods and Services Tax (GST), in total from a supplier with the same Australian Business Number (ABN)

My question is …what if I have two separate invoices (different dates) but from same supplier (same ABN) eg $200 and $150, can I claim TRS on total $350? OR the single invoice has to be over $300 ?

  • Multiple invoices are ok as far as they are from the same ABN
