Motion Detector with Alarm Recommendations

So what's OzB's favourite indoor motion detector?
Was after a battery powered unit that I can put up in the house due to a current spate of low-lives breaking in to homes around the place.
I already have a couple of Eufy-Cams but wanted a noise maker to scare them off as well.

Something like this would suit but with a stand mount rather than a wall mount.

And on the same topic do 'security' stickers placed around the windows do any good?

Thanks

  • Doesnt Eufy homebase become the Alarm / Siren?

    • Not sure. I'll take a look.

      • You can setup Geo fencing, so if you are away from the house, itll activate the alarm, but not sure on which models it applies too.

        • Yeah I've only got the indoor pan and tilt units that operate via the app.

    • Pretty sure the siren from these is pretty pathetic. It's just like an alarm on your phone.

      • The base and the cameras have an alarm but it isnt deafening like a traditional alarm.

  • motion detection outside would be far more effective than having them inside, if the space allows

    • I was thinking of both. We are on a property so I could put one on the driveway but the rest of the area is a bit too big to cover without spending more than I want to. The indoor alarm would be mostly for when we aren't here and need to give any would be crims a scare.

a motion floodlight outside would be more effective in scaring them

        • I'm not sure I have any power points around the entries.

also add a fake camera as well. might give them second thoughts.

won't stop somebody either determined or high though.

the purpose of having motion detection and flood lights outside is that you want to deter the person from breaking a window or door or doing damage to your property
if the motion detection is inside, the window and door would be already broken for the intruder to trigger the alarm, even if they run away after that, you still have to pay to make repairs to the window or door.

but if an alarm was triggered before anything is broken, then you have saved yourself a lot of money.

        • Agreed, I was planning on doing both. :)

A battery (not wall) powered unit that makes an alarm with motion sense probably won't be very loud.

And to be honest any would be criminal who hears that would just locate the device and smash it.

Can you do preventative measures like a flood light that has motion activation outside, bars on the windows, a better front door lock?

How were the other houses broken into? We had a break-in at a neighbours garage recently in our apartment block, turns out they left it unlocked and the thieves tried all of them but theirs was the unlucky one that was unlocked.

    • bars on the windows

I wanted to add bars on windows but the misso objected with:

*what are we going to do in event of fire and cant escape through normal exists
      *looks like a prison

      • what are we going to do in event of fire and cant escape through normal exists

Seems very unlikely that in the event of a fire that every egress option would be unavailable. Do you only have one door to the house? If all doors were unavailable because of fire then I doubt the windows near the doors would be a viable option anyway.

        looks like a prison

Not wrong there, but depending on where you live (eg: Merrylands) there's a reason why all the houses have bars on them.

    • Not too sure how they got in but one neighbour had 2 cars stolen, they pinched the keys then rolled the card down the hill before starting them. Another elderly lady who lives alone got crash tackled to the ground after they got in at 10:30 at night, I don't know what they got away with as I haven't spoken to her personally.

On further reflection the indoor alarm doesn't have to be battery powered if I could get one that just plugs into a normal power socket.

      • down the hill before starting them

        yoooo that is genius

  • Thieves these days are getting increasingly brazen, my local neighbourhood watch group regularly posts videos from eufy/ring/etc video of thieves still proceeding with break in / going through cars even when lights / alarms trip.

Like someone else said though, having deterrents outside is generally the better option.

The rest is kind of out of your hands.

I have two imou LOOC cameras that have built in sensor lights, and siren and 2 way chat.
Haven't ever had to actually activate the siren but i guess its an option?

That's because just having a picture of their face (even if the quality of the camera you have allows for it) isn't enough for the police to really care about doing anything. they always have something "more important" to do (eg: strip searching teenagers at concerts).

I had a friend have his house broken into, lots of stuff stolen, and the dumbass dropped his wallet with his ID in it. It went to court and his defence was that his wallet was stolen and the actual thieves left it at the scene. That was enough reasonable doubt that there was no conviction apparently.

      • i read earlier this week of a thief who dropped their centrelink papework for an appointment for job seeker, had the place time date, reference etc

police: well that could belong to anybody, we're not even going to consider it a lead
