International cheque fee (sending a cheque overseas)

Hi guys! Need to send a Euro cheque to France (need to be cashed at a local bank). CBA wants $30, is there a cheaper alternative?

Cannot use PayPal or Western Union. It's for a French government agency.

Cheers!

  • I think around $20-25 is the cheapest you can get for a bank draft. You may also need to be a customer to get the price.

For small amounts how about a postal order?

PS: It's not Euro dollar, it's just Euro, that's the name of the currency.

    • Thanks for clarifying. Euro it is. :-)

Cheque amount is only 15 Euro.

Does postal order come in foreign currencies? Will check it out. Next stop auspost.com.au.

  • How about traveler's cheques? I used to send money over to the US by buying travelers cheques via Westpac with my credit card.

  • Bendigo Bank only charges $10, looks good.

  • Hi.Just FYI greenpossum….postal orders for OS currency are non-existent (i,ve asked at my local).Bendigo Bank sounds like the way to go Browser

    • Yeah, it looks like Auspost has gone with Western Union money transfers, and international postal orders are extinct. Question is why is that French government agency still stuck in the 20th century re payment acceptance. Such a odd country, parts of it are ultramodern and other parts are quaint.

Send cash. Find a local who's headed to Europe, and give them your money.

  • Have you tried Australia Post? Its been a while since I've had the need but I seem to remember finding this out from a similar situation to yours… use an International Money Order.

Just checked the Australia Post website - Money Orders up to $1,000 cost $7.95, over $1,000 to $5,000 $8.95

  • No go!!! Got an international bank draft from Westpac, but was rejected by the French government agency. They are now specifically asking for a cheque issued by a bank in France (with a France address).

Any French bank has a branch in Sydney? Already tried BNP, they don't do retail banking in Australia. Any others?

    Cheers!
