That's a lot of reviews about it not working well in Australia

    • Mine was faultless until the spindly piece inside it snapped

        faultless until a fault occurred

isnt every single product in the world technically "faultless" until something breaks?

        • Clearly you've never used a Microsoft product

      • Thanks for confirming. Will spend a bit more $ on a quality lock

  • wait for eufy smart lock with wifi to come back for $280

  • Can recommend Samsung biometric locks, been using from about 8 years.

    • my samsung lock failed after 8, a leaking battery corroded the terminals and ate through the conformal coating, then moisture got in and did more damage. So a PCB failure as opposed to anything mechanical.

also now they are called zigbang… wtf

      • I have a drawer full of eneloops for that reason ;)

i got a drawer full of laddas now

      • Thanks for the heads up

You need a single-cylinder lock, which is very uncommon in Australia. Most of our locks are double-cylinder.

I had to buy a single-cylinder lock from US to make it work. It has been working well for me, it does chew up battery pretty fast, and they're not cheap.

Keen to know how long the battery last on this ?It seems ,this model has the expensive batteries. Used to have the older model with AA batteris and they only starts warning in about 3 weeks and would get another 1 week after. We operate the door about 10 times a day.

Thanks OP, I've had an August lock for about 6 months.
So far I've had to change the batteries twice, looks like they last about 3 months. Lock is on front door, so gets opened closed quite often.

Besides the battery, the device has been fantastic.

Wifi signal strength can also affect the battery life

The black version is part of "Buy 2, save 11%" promo, so add these flash cards for $11.31 (there's probably something else a few dollars cheaper if you can be bothered looking) to save a further $15.92 overall bringing the price down to $220.36

I've had mine for years, it's the Smart Lock Pro model that takes AA batteries. I also got the August Connect plug to connect it to wifi and the keypad. The lock has been faultless and with good quality batteries the batteries have always lasted ages for us (I feel like almost a year?). The keypad was constantly going flat quickly, it has this feature where it supposedly detects motion nearby and activates the backlight in the dark so you can see what you're doing. Seemed to activate erroneously lots which I think is what stuffed the battery life. Anyway, found an option to turn that feature off and problem went away.

It's so neat being able to press the lock button on the keypad when you walk out, then just have the house magically unlock itself for you upon return (another option). Also being able to give a code to the cleaner / dog walker that only works for the timeslot they're expected.

Then when we moved, new place had a mortice look, so it sat depressingly in a box and I was forced to use a key like a caveman, until after almost a year I had an epiphany, "porque no los dos?!".

I went to Bunnings and purchased something like this, cut an additional hole and fitted it in addition to what was already there. No more keys for me!

So glad someone posted this August smart lock on OzB, thanks OP

careful this lock takes 2x CR123A batteries in this the 4th Gen

I know August shrink the 4th gen smaller but the battery longevity is always a bit of a concern at the back of my head

budget the battery cost because it doesn't take our OzB favourite AA/AAA eneloops

  • bought one with the keypad. thanks @coxjon, @dan199 and @frkino

  • This is pretty easy to hack btw.

Better security with a standard lock & key.

I wouldn't be comfortable with it on an external door, I put mine in the garage so it saves me carrying a key at least.

We have the 2nd or 3rd Gen model. The lock itself works well enough, although battery life wasn’t the greatest at 3-4 months. However, I don’t like smart appliances that are wholly dependant on a phone so we got the optional numpad as well. That component was awful with it failing to register codes reliably leading to something like a 30% failed code rate or something obscene. Unsure if part of the issue was the numpads wireless being flakey and slow to connect or something.

Ended up swapping the August out for the cheap $120 smart locks published here via eBay sellers that I think were old Telstra Smart Home stock (which is itself a rebadged Yale lock). Those have the numpad built in and are 100% reliable. Uses ZigBee which TBH is an advantage and battery life is way better than the August.

August is fine if you will use your phone to unlock the door. From my experience with the numpad, I’d look elsewhere if you want to also get that accessory.

OP, can you please help how to set up camel alerts, thanks.

    • +2

Create an account on au.camelcamelcamel and search for the product you’re after on Amazon. You can see price history in a graph and set an alert for desired price

      • can it only be done for amazon ? anyway it could search other websites ?

        • Camel is for amazon only.
But you can use price hipster which allows for selected other sites, you'll need to add alerts for each store individually.

  • The somwehat better value Wyze Lock Bolt can be landed for around US$110
    https://www.amazon.com/Fingerprint-Bluetooth-Replacement-Wea…

  • Looks like a decent price if it can handle a few good years or more of use ..

Are Yale and August competitors in the door lock game?
