Upgrading DSLR

Hi, I would just like some advice on whether I should upgrade my camera or not.
I currently own a Canon 1100D and want to upgrade it to a Nikon D7000.
Some of the questions which I would like answered are:
1. Why should or shouldn't I upgrade?
2. Is the image quality considerably noticeable?
3. What alternatives are there?
4. If "no" then when should I upgrade my DSLR?

Thanks in advance.
Also some of my photos can be seen here:

    1. Why should or shouldn't I upgrade? really up to you and how much you will stick to it. for me, yes i would up grade.
    2. Is the image quality considerably noticeable? yes very
    3. What alternatives are there? Nikon d5100 (for intermediates) Pros: same picture quality as d7000, smaller/lighter. Cons: No inbuilt focusing motor (important when buying more lens), less features as d5100.
    4. If "no" then when should I upgrade my DSLR? there are whispers of an up grade to the d7000 to ofcause when that comes out there will be a price change. if you can get a d7000 body for below $900 that is good value.

Very nice photos, seems like you know what you are doing. an upgrade will make a difference BUT buying a good lens would also improve your imagines while not decreasing in value as camera bodies do.

    • Thanks :)
The lenses I've heard of many times before and seen some physical evidence where the lenses make a fairly big difference.
I've contemplated over the Canon 15-85mm lens but I don't think I'll stick with it because I'm a bit of a Nikon supporter. I only bought the 1100D to experiment and on a budget.
DWI has around the $900 price mark and I will hopefully purchase it from there according to other peoples inputs.

      Thanks for yours :)

  • if you cant tell the difference you probably dont need an upgrade.

    1. If it makes you happy and you have the money, why no
    2. Yes in low light
    3. If you like Nikon, just look at there range D800 etc..
    4. A better model will always come out, just buy when you see something you like.
  • Nikon is going to be releasing a lower-end Full Frame camera sometime this year. I'd hold out till then. Or get the D800 which has rocked my world.

What is your budget , i am actually selling a brand new nikon d5100 with the standard 18-55mm lens also including extended 3 years warranty by Nikon Australia.

    • around the $1000 mark as I can purchase the d7000 body for $900 at DWI cameras.
I tried the d5100 and didn't like it very much, sorry but thank you for the offer :)

    • Try selling it here though:

  • I've kept the money and am eagerly awaiting for the next d7XXX to be launched.

    • Talked to a JB salesman when I was looking at the D3200 and he said that the Nikon rep said the D7000 isn't going to be replaced this year and that he's looking to buy one himself for video shooting and complementing his 5D.
Also earlier in the year it was said that Nikon will reveal 3 new cameras in 2012 in addition to D4 and D800. So far the first has been the D3200, rumours are pointing at a high chance of a cheap FX camera and the third more than likely being a D300S replacement for the flagship DX camera.
D300S is 3 years old, the D7000 is only 1.5 years old. Also if the D7000 is to be replaced you'd think the D5100 will too, considering they both use the same sensor.

      • Thanks for the comment, I might buy that instead then or buy the d7000 if the price drops by a hundred or two from the release of the new camera.

        • If you're in no hurry to buy a camera, then I'd say wait a bit and see what happens. Before the end of the year it looks like BIG things are going to happen.

        • What do you mean by BIG things? :o

Though if I see a cool sale on the camera, I'll probably jump for it :p

        • BIG things as in new products that will hit the market that may or may not change the DSLR market and how they're marketed at new users.

        • I see

wouldn't it be better to stick with cannon so you can use the same lens? instead of switching to nikon?
might want to check out a D60 maybe?

1100D isn't that good, better upgrade it

    • I've given up on switching to Nikon for now.
Instead I purchased a better lens from Canon and will seek to upgrade towards a better body provided by Canon.
