Looks like the toxic world of Uber has spread its wings again.

    • 20 Jan. 2022 - Nearly 50 investors in start-up Car Next Door, including Hyundai, Suncorp, Ampol and entrepreneur Steve Baxter of Shark Tank fame, are expected to share in about $50 million, after Uber acquired the Australian car-sharing service.

Car Next Door’s co-founder and chief executive, Will Davies, said the start-up had raised $25 million from investors after launching 10 years ago. It featured on Channel Ten’s business pitch program Shark Tank in 2016 at which time Mr Baxter injected $300,000.

Despite struggling through COVID-19, the start-up drew a diverse investor base from crowdfunding platforms to companies such as Hyundai and Ampol.

Venture capital legend Roger Allen, Wayne Baskin from Superhero, the Liberman family and Melissa Widner, formerly of NAB Ventures, were among other investors. Investible co-founder Trevor Folsom has served as the start-up’s chairman since an investment in 2015.

Lawyer Sarah Druce, who is married to stock trader Keiran Horth and last year sold her Bronte house for a record $17.9 million, came on board the start-up last year which was founded by Mr Davies, David Trumbull, and Chloe Iliffe – who together own an estimated 30 per cent of the business. Lawyer Kieren Parker from Addisons and Deloitte’s Alex Jordan helped the start-up finalise the deal.

Uber has not disclosed the amount of the deal but industry sources said Car Next Door was valued at about $50 million in 2018 when the company raised $5 million from investors. In 2019, the company went on to raise at least an additional $6.2 million led by South Korean car maker Hyundai.

A share trade in December 2021 appeared to value the business at $87 million. However, given these were preference shares and may have been a related party transaction, it was not necessarily indicative of the price Uber paid.

The blended valuation of series B shares valued the company at $49 million and sources close to the company suggested the transaction was priced closer to that same level.

      • Is it cheaper than goget?

Two of the worst companies I’ve dealt with - Uber and Car Next Door. Staying far away.

  • +1

Really unhappy. Used CND for their easy to find, basic cheap vans and utes. Tying in to Uber means its inevitably either the car owner or me getting screwed.

either the car owner or me getting screwed.

      uber: why not both? lel

I like the prices but then noticed that they charge 30 - 50 cents per kilometer on top

So not to good if you are planning to go on a long road trip

    • +3

All car-share services you need to pay per km (daily rates tend to have 100km included). Hiring a car you need to pay for fuel (and usually a lot more for the car itself). Road trips are expensive. Cars are expensive…

I did a quick comparison, I did a day trip in August in a goget. New Corolla, 304km, 24 hour booking, damage cover. Was $170.

A 2018 golden astra near me would be somewhere around $230 for the same on Uber carshare.

You can hire a car with the likes of Avis for under $100 a day … why would you pay $170 / $230 ?

          • @Nom: Goget includes fuel. Can you really hire Avis for a day, fuel for $300km and cover included for $100?

            • @ShouldIBuyIt: 300km of fuel in a new Corolla is what, $50 ?
Still looks like the standard rental is ahead, although there is obviously a convenience factor if you don't live near a rental office 😁
No clue how the insurance costings compare, I've never taken anything other than the most basic insurance when I need a rental 🤷🏼‍♂️

          • @Nom: That’s including fuel and reduced excess. Plus convenience, goget has cars everywhere, Avis does not.

Base rate for the car alone is $88 and includes 120km of driving for a day, it’s pretty competitive.

      • Flexicar don't charge by km for hourly and start at $11/hr.

My fav since I started with Hertz 24/7. Not very convenient unless inner city or lucky to be near a pod.

        • Unlimited km on hourly bookings, but start charging per km on daily bookings once you go over 100km.
