So is this any different from having access to free linkedin learning via a library membership?

    • I'd also like to know about this if anyone can clue me in.

    “Certificates”

  • I wouldn’t do these seriously, they don’t hold much weight whatsoever. Consider them entertainment, like YouTube videos.. Good to do these to understand some basic concepts as well. If you want to seriously learn about project management, pick up a copy of PMBOK instead.

    • Are the PMI certifications worth obtaining if one wants to pursue a career in project management?

      • Yes, PMI does help. Obviously you get the certification to show off but also get understanding on PM procedures and functions.

    • I agree. I tried the dev exam without watching the videos and got 83%. The only hard questions were the ones that didn't make any sense. As an employer, I wouldn't look for these.

      • Honestly in this skills shortage, it might be enough

  • +2

I did the sysadmin exam just to see if I could yoink the certificate. I passed, but it wants you to go through all the video content prior to receiving the cert lol

    • I've just left the videos playing in the background haha

    Business Analyst
    Skills you’ll learn:
    • Agile principles

Uhm, really? Agile is how you deliver the solution, and far more to do with project management.
Agile has a place in software for sure, and some things can't be done any other way. But I can't stand it when people think it's the answer to everything. Requirements gathering should be at the top of that list - not Agile, which for most people is a euphemism for "code first, ask questions later".

    • +3

      agile all the things!

my waterfall is agile! devops is agile!

even my pipeline is agile! everyone gets agile! thats why we have 1 hour standups of 600 people!

that's the uber of agilest agile!

      • +2

        Haha, cracked me up.

I once had a total rant against someone who was trying to find a way to squeeze a project into a budget. He realised he didn't have enough to do it properly, so he said "let's not worry about the design phase, we'll do it Agile". As if doing it Agile somehow means you don't have to bother with requirements analysis or architectural design.

Agile can work well, but more often than not, the daily stand-ups exist just for those people who can't be trusted to get on with a job for more than one day unless someone chases them. When people tell me they want to do something "Agile", I ask them "what does that mean, exactly", just for a laugh as they fail to explain it.

        • +2

yeah. "agile" becomes a "we gunna wing it" thing to a lot of people who have nfi.. but that's the world we live in.

          • +2

@slowmo: So agile is the new six sigma.

            • @xoom: i mean, i have people tell me the six sigma's most important principle is the "do but don't get caught" flexibility. lol

  • Looking directly on the Microsoft website, it looks like the equivalent software development certificate was retired
