Lower Asking Value During a Product's Return Period - Experience?

I've seen a lot of stores give out price guarantees for 7 days where they'll give store credit or refund you the difference. I've noticed some stores even offer exclusive 30 day price guarantees if you pay subscriptions to their services.

But here's a thought… if you product has a 30 day returns window and you see it somewhere else cheaper…what's to stop you returning it for a better price?

I know the Product needs to be deemed "Unused & Unopened, packaging in good condition (product not faulty) - eg change of mind." but if this is the case the 7 day price guarantee seems a bit pointless.

Interested to hear peoples thoughts / experience with this. (I'm thinking about this within the context of an upcoming TV purchase)

Do you intend to purchase a TV and keep it unopened in the box for 30 days in case the price happens to drop so you can return it?

If not, then that's where the 7 day price protection kicks in. So you can open it and if price changes within 7 days then you're covered.

    • 50/50 really, but imagine that would be sticking point. Used vs unopened.

Though I have returned items (electronics / laptops) after having used them for a few days with and not falling in love and still secured a "change of mind" refund.

In that case that was a full item return for refund, not sure if stores are more picky about TVs.

I've bought many products that have later been sold elsewhere or at the same store for cheaper. If at the same store, I ask for the difference back and many times it's honoured.

If for whatever reason they won't allow it, I simply buy the same product at the other store for cheaper, and return that item back to the first store (unopened, unused and re-sellable).

    • That's an interesting thought about buying a new item for the refund.

Though wouldn't they catch you out on the Serial number of the product?

Or are stores / salespeople not all that particular about differing Serial Numbers.

For electronics, the most I've seen the staff do is check if the seals are still intact.

When performing the above, I tend to heavily inspect the receipt and often there is no serial number included, but rather the product code. If the product code matches, then I just proceed.

I've done it with clothes, mobile phone, toys, xbox, games, pc peripherals, Bunnings etc.

As an aside, I do have 28 degrees credit card which offers its own price guarantee, but tend not to use it in place of other cards that give me rewards.

Only downside to the above is that I have now become a receipt hoarder.

  • As you say, the 30 day change of mind will (presumably) require the product to be unopened, etc. to gain a refund. Obviously you then also need to go through the steps of refund and purchase at an alternative outlet.

Conversely, the 7 day price guarantee allows you to use the product immediately and then get the difference refunded with nothing else to do.

    • Not if from Amazon, Apple is 14 days but till 8/1/23 now holiday returns.

  • Petition for latitude to bring back price protection option for new sign ups.
