Help Needed: Keeping Qantas Points Generated by Credit Cards

Hi I have a westpac Mastercard and an Amex that came with it when I signed up. I got a bunch of qantas points at the start and have generated a lot over a couple of years.

I dont really need them right now and we arent flying much at all at moment.

I went to cancel the cards and I was warned that I could lose the qantas points that were generated via these cards.

How do I avoid this? I don't want to pay the annual fees for these cards any more but I want to keep the points for a rainy day.

Thanks for any advice

Typically, the Qantas points are attached your personal Qantas account. If you didn't have one already, a new Qantas account should have been created when you joined up with the cards. The Qantas account and credit cards are separate, so stopping your credit card should not affect your long-term accrued points.

Any points within the month/cycle of the credit card may be lost though, but unlikely to be much when compared to potentially years.

I cycle credit cards often, all of which are Qantas points rewards.

This. Sign into your Qantas rewards account. If the points are shown, you can cancel your credit cards as the points have already been transferred to your Qantas rewards account and they are yours.

If your Qantas rewards account doesn't show the points, you'll need to contact each bank to link your CC accounts to your Qantas rewards account.

to add to this, in terms of already accrued points in your QFF account, as long as you earn or use at least a single point every 18 months, they would be intact.

      see here for T&Cs

    • Thank you all for the advice, i will investigate.
      Really appreciate it

They might be referring to you losing Qantas points if there is no activity on your Qantas account for 18 months. You won't lose the points if you cancel your credit card, but you do have to gain at least 1 frequent flyer point in the next 18 months somehow.

My personal go to is BP Rewards. Even if BP is not your preferred fuel vendor, pick up a tank from there once a year and you're sweet.

But there are of course heaps of ways to generate "a point" every 18 months to keep someone ticking over.

    • Yes i think this was referred to, thank you for the advice

Oh and if you don't already have a Qantas account, do NOT pay for a Qantas FF account….there are ways to get this free

    • Good to know, thank you

As Porker says, your points are attached to your Qantas Frequent Flyers account, not the CC's. For my cards I accrue points in the month, and then at the end of the month they do a transfer to my Qantas FF Account.

Something to note: There is an expiry date for inactive Qantas points: https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/discover-and-joi…

    Keep your account active
    What you need to do

To ensure you keep your Qantas Points from expiring you'll need to earn or use Qantas Points through your account at least once every 18 months. This includes earning or using Qantas Points with our program partners, but does not include transferring points to or from an Eligible Family Member (Family Transfer) or the transfer of points from Qantas Business Rewards.

The 18-month time period starts from the date of your last eligible activity. If your last activity was an eligible flight, it is the date the flight was taken.

If you have any other way of earning points this shouldn't effect you, else there are lots of ways to earn a few points (get some fuel from a BP and scan your Qantas card). Be careful if your household has multiple Qantas FF accounts and the points are split to make sure all the accounts are active, or transfer all the points to one account.

    • Great advice, thank you

You can use the Qantas Wellbeing app so you don't lose your QFF points through inactivity. Just sync it to Apple Health or Google Fit on your phone, and you'll earn a few points every time you walk 2000 steps in a day.

    • I have mine also activated for sleep! Sleep 6 hours, get points!

      • Thanks for the tip!

    • Nice!

Simply join BP Rewards and scan your Qantas Frequent Flyer card at the counter to be rewarded with points every time you fill up with fuel, grab a snack or pick up the essentials.

    https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/partners/bp.html

That is one way to accumulate QFF points.

You can also convert your Woolworths Rewards Point to QFF points.

    • Thank you!
