Windows Laptop Users: Does Standby Work?

I saw this video from LTT in my list of suggestions on connected/modern standby issues. I've seen issues with sleep mentioned in comments on laptop deals and have had issues myself.

For people with a laptop running Windows - Does standby work with the out of the box configuration?

Have you had issues with:

  • Battery drain while asleep
  • Laptop waking up from sleep in a backpack?

If you've managed to fix the issue, how? Or what workaround do you use? (eg: disabling connected/modern standby)

Not sure if modern standby is the direct cause or whether this is an ASUS issue but my UX461UA as well as others have this issue where it goes into a sleep "coma" where once the laptop goes to sleep it can't be wakened. Happens more frequently when the laptop is on charge. And similar to what was mentioned on LTT the laptop does get uncomfortably hot.

However, after making a forum post about my SSD, I came across a fix for my issue. Not sure if it applies to modern standby but I thought it is worth mentioning.

I just set everything to hibernate.

Nothing is that important that my laptops need to be instantly awake like a phone.

    • This.

      • And that's fine for as long as hibernate works. In my experience the half-life of standby on a new install is maybe a couple of months and hibernate maybe extends that by a couple more.

  • Windows bit-rot usually eats stand-by first. It has such a short half-life on any system I've used in the last 15 years that it may as well not be a feature at all in my experience.

In my experience Mac's a much better at this, but then it's been a while since I've used on and I hear stories that it's busted there too.
