Don't Trust Amazon Warehouse "Like New" Products

I bought a Samsung 4k monitor from Amazon Warehouse with the description, "Condition: Used - Like New - Item will come in original packaging. Packaging will be damaged."

I took this literally to mean that only the packaging will be damaged, but the product would be fine.

But upon opening the box, the monitor screen was not only full of fingerprints, but also had quite a deep scratch right smack bang in the middle. It was pretty obvious, even at a quick glance. Not sure how they could possibly mark this as a Like New item.

So this is just a short PSA to not trust Amazon Warehouse and their condition descriptions.

They did organise a refund, but of course lugging a monitor box to the post office, and getting the label printed at Officeworks, is quite the hassle. And now I still need a monitor.

Here are photos of the "Like New" monitor scratch.

Ehhh, it's hit or miss. You cannot state an entire PSA based off one experience.

So many people have had the opposite experience and received a literally brand new item instead of "used - like new".

At least Amazon has a good returns process. There are usually no-label and courier pickup options for such items when creating a return.

"So many people have had the opposite experience and received a literally brand new item "

Yup I have scored many items this way by buying "Used like new" and as bad as "Used cosmetic imperfections on item" and always gotten a squeaky clean product in it's original packaging. No sign I could tell that it was a returned product other than the Amazon returns sticker that is stuck on the packaging.

I have chatted to a few other users here and their experience has been the same. So I guess OP just got really unlucky and more like a once off where the Amazon inspector did a terrible job inspecting the item or the person who returned it stooged it by scratching the screen when unboxing, then was dishonest with the returns process.

There was another user as well who I think made a forum post about being concerned about an ultra wide monitor which was "Used cosmetic imperfections" on Amazon. They took their chances and were extremely happy with the result.

      • I think I saw that other guy's post, which is why I decided to take the chance. Just unlucky.

Glad others have had better experiences. Not sure I'm game enough to try again with Amazon Warehouse though. Once bitten, twice shy.

          "Once bitten, twice shy."

Yeah I agree, I just saw how much you paid and would probably feel the same way for something that expensive.

The items I got were all $150 and under so it's disappointing to hear it happened to you on something that's $350. You would expect the more expensive items to be checked and inspected with more effort than the cheaper items.

Anyway maybe "Bad experience with Amazon AU "Used - Like new" products" is a better title. That way it's easy to find by searching and there will be a record of your experience for others to read.

you can ask for label-less return. there is no need to print out the label.

This is good to know, I will try this next time, thanks.

If it's Auspost, they only need the barcode from the packing slip email to scan, and they'll print you another sticker when you drop it off.

  • Sounds like a one time thing TBH. Cool your jets.

  • How much? Size?

    • It was only $355. 27". New was $450 or so I think, so quite a decent discount, which is why I was tempted. Lesson learnt.

Someone probably did a dodgy and returned a used monitor (in place of a new one) that Amazon didn't check and just sent out upon receiving your order.

Like Hybroid has said above, it's good that they have a good returns process.

Yeah, I think you are right, I suspected something shifty like that. Still had stickers on it, but they were askew, possibly peeled off the new monitor and stuck onto an old damaged monitor and returned.

Amazon should really have checked it, though, as the damage was fairly obvious. I guess they don't even bother to inspect things at all, which is why people can potentially get away with dodgy returns.

  • Good to know.

Less so don't trust Amazon descriptions but more know what you're getting yourself into. Warehouse items are stuff returned by customers or food near best before so there will be times you get things that are unopened and new despite the description or complete sh*t.

    They did organise a refund

Sounds like I can indeed trust Amazon Warehouse "Like New" Products

  • They did organise a refund, but of course lugging a monitor box to the post office, and getting the label printed at Officeworks, is quite the hassle. And now I still need a monitor.

Such first world problems….. You gambled on a 'used' product and lost this time round. Buy new next time.

    • Yeah, true, just bought a new monitor from Dell. But then again, this is OzBargain and you are telling me not to be cheap?! That's why we're here! Lol.

buying used/damaged from amazon is not a bargain unless it was half price

        • You're not going to find a "Like New" product on Amazon for half price. Ridiculous.

  • You can do returns for amazon warehouse buys right?
