Need Advice on Long Term Insect Repeller

Title pretty much sums up what I'm looking for. I recently moved from overseas country where insects are near to non-existent, so just the sight of palm sized spider, huge ants and thumb-sized-weird-looking gray insects crawling on the wall/floor is scared the shit out of me. Although all the windows have safety nets, I have no idea how and where they can come inside. But I really want to block their path at least for a while, maybe 2-3 months. I have no idea about the insect repeller options, or how and where to apply them. I appreciate your advice.

Where is this overseas country where insects are near to non-existent? I’d like to move there asap please.

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. But I advice you to look at this first :)

      • Thanks for clarifying. It does have some extreme temperatures! I think I’ll just stay put for now ;)

But to answer your question, I find that most insect screens only stop a certain size of flying insects and the creepy crawlies do still get in unfortunately. I think there are some insect barrier sprays you can get at the supermarket for spiders that last a couple of weeks at least? Haven’t tried them before but failing that, keep a couple of takeaways boxes handy for catching them and then you can release the caught insects outside.

  • You could pay for a pest controller to treat all external nesting and entry points annually. About $400 for an apartment, $800-1000 for an average sized house.

You could try the self applied pest controls sprays, you can get them from any large supermarket, good hardware store or Bunnings. They are generally pump packs and form a barrier around your dwelling.

Or just embrace Australia and our wonderful range of wildlife. It hasn't killed the vast majority of us before you, nor your neighbours, so just embrace it. Wear it as a badge of honour and turn your sad clown face upside down.

Turn it in to a game. Name your hunstman spider friends cute names, leave them be in the corner of your rooms killing other annoying insects like mosquitoes, and just gently relocate the bullants (they don't want to be inside your house either) in toilet tissue back outside. The thumb sized grey things sound like slaters and are as harmless as grandma's belly button fluff.

That sounds expensive? Our pest controller recommends having it done every 6 months but it's ~$250 for a 4br 2 storey duplex with fairly large yard.

      • I had about $300 for getting rid of an ant problem, sprayed outside plus also pumped stuff into the walls to get rid of the ones already in the house and left a bunch of bug traps throughout the place. Similar, 2 story townhouse.

  • You can do repellent bomvs where you leave them in an enclosed space (like a garage) for a few hrs. You can buy an insect zapper to leave outside a door area to kill the flying ones. Also outside the house you can use insect barrier spray that is designed to deter insects for a period of time. (Think Bunnings or supermarket). I find that the most important is keeping on top of them. Get them when they're small, dust/brush outside doorways and window areas and similar inside with a broom.

  • Don’t buy any of the products from a the supermarket or Bunnings, you will just be wasting your money. Look for a place that sells chemicals for pest control AgServ or Globe both Australia wide. If it’s just general pests like spiders, ants, etc then you would need a chemical called Bifenthrin. Mix it with water (follow label instructions)

Spray the perimeter of your house, up the walls and at least 300mm out on the ground, around the windows, pergola, anywhere you see spiderwebs.

Don’t drown it so you have the chemicals dripping down the walls, just enough to cover it. Wear protection gloves, mask, goggles just to be safe.

    Hope this helps
