[Zip, eBay Plus] Synology DS920+ 4 Bay Diskless NAS Unit $704.65 Delivered @ Computer Alliance eBay

220
XMASZIP

Few bucks cheaper than the previous cheapest deal ($711). Yes, there's a new model out (DS923+) but this one is still more than good enough for a home/small office use and at this price beats the 2 bay DS720+

Apparently this one is better if you want to run a plex server as the new one has an amd cpu with no integrated gpu so no transcoding

    • 4bay no need for encoding, would a J model be enough? Just need it to store photos and sync my cellphone..

      • If you're only storing and not doing any processing, pretty much any NAS would do.

    • Correct, the new DS923+ runs an AMD Ryzen GPU-less CPU, which means transcoding will suffer greatly vs the DS920+

      • Some players don't need transcoding (e.g. apple tv will play HEVC/H.265), so check what media types you have and what machine you are going to play them on to see if this is an issue for you.

  • Can this run proxmox?

    • No. But it does have a propriatory Virtual Machine Manager that can run Windows/Linux on. Not the quickest, but a NAS isn't designed to do much more than basic NASsy stuff (Plex, storage, basic Docker apps, etc)…

  • What 16TB HDD to put in this?

    • exos, ironwolf pro, Ironwolf or even wd red

I wonder if this will dip into the $600s. The previous model did when it was superseded by this one.

It was $696 a few weeks ago.

    Rookie mistake.
Bought the unit and forgot to add HDD's

Now I can't purchase the HDD's at a discounted rate!

  • Thinking of getting this (my first NAS) to run as a Plex server. Curious to know how loud these things get. It will be on a shelf relatively close to the sofa. That's the only place where i can keep the modem/router.

Just did the same thing recently and have the NAS in the media cabinet instead. The noise is obvious I would say which is mainly from the HDD activity (only 2x EXOS installed currently) amplified by the shelf

      • Thanks. Im concerned the noise would become an annoyance. I could tuck it away behind books etc. How do others deal with this? Is it an issue?

      • Have you tried putting acoustic foam on the shelves?

        • +1

I got some anti-vibration mats to sit the NAS on and I bought some acoustic foam to line the shelf from Aliexpress. Will see how it goes

Honestly, that's the worst place to put it, in the same room where your TV is. It gets loud. Not the NAS itself but the drives. Some are louder than others, but at the end they are all loud and the clicking and scratching will definitely be noticable.

I guess I'm lucky as my DS720+ is in the walk in pantry with all the other IT equipment I have, so I can't hear it. DS920+ is a 4 bay NAS, I would assume the noise (with all 4 bays occupied) is even worse.

Buy a long enough ethernet cable and put the NAS somewhere you can't hear it.

      • Thanks, appreciate the insights! I might look into powerline adapters and put it in a closet.

        • Not sure about wifi through-put but potentially a Wireless Access Point that has an ethernet port to connect to the NAS.

          • @scottb721: Yea the wireless access point would be a last resort i suppose. I have a spare ac lying around which i might use. Theoretically, the speeds of ac should be enough?

  • Not an eBay Plus member, price is $829, with $10 discount

  • Can i pay 1/2 with Giftcard and other half with zip and still get 15% off the total price?

    • +1

You can pay 99.9% with gift cards and still get the full 15% off.

  • Amazon selling 769, hope it stay with that price, wait for gc 10% off, should get it below 700.
