Do You Take a Sick Day When Your Kids Are Sick?

Just wondering what people do? Do you ship them off to childcare even though they're sick ? Or do you call in sick to work and fake a doctor's certificate?

      • True.

      • Depends on the industry. If you work for instance in select industries e.g. government or university, you can transfer it over to another employee in the same industry as part of that enterprise agreement

I did this recently, transfered SL plus transfered my LSL. AL does need to get paid out by previous employer.

Just suddenly get sick for a month during your last month of work. Get your doctor to say it's stress or some bullshit.

For many people leaving a job, getting a med cert for stress is not even a lie.

        • @AustriaBargain This is standard in many industries lol

    • Yeah, you're right. You don't lose them unless you leave.

You can take carers leave and most companies shouldn't ask for certificate for 1 day only

  • We have a work colleague who completely rorted the system including taking 5 days carers leave when his girlfriend got a period. No joke, the managers were very nice and let him get away with a lot but eventually even they started to get annoyed. He would take 1+ days of leave almost every week ever since his wife got pregnant and then had a child.

    • I legitimately burned through all of my sick leave and some unpaid leave while my wife was prego & sick

      • He takes about 70 days of sick and carers leave every year for the past 4 - 5 years. Has been caught out in lies and other things in the meantime. But luckily managers were just too nice for a while and then with restructuring managers have changed twice in the last 3 years. He's having a 2nd child now but lucky for him we are in between direct managers and the higher up managers are frustrated with him but are leaving it for the new direct manager once hired to take care of it

He takes about 2 to 3 days of leave for every normal ultrasound check. It's gotten to the point managers are now resorting to be more strict with everyone's leave just because of him sadly.

        • If it's 70 days compared with an annual entitlement of probably 10-12, I assume most of it would be unpaid. That's probably why they don't care that much.

          • @acersaurus: Nope, some companies have unlimited and others give a large chunk when you first join and then accrue every year. Others also have sick leave accruing at a certain rate and personal leave being separate and accruing at its own rate and you can move leave from sick to personal and vice versa.

Any chance of sharing the names of any of these companies with this level of benefit?

You are obviously working for one of them so leave the name out but maybe just the industry would give a clue.

              • @Grunntt: I was very surprised to find out some of the banks (my friends were managers / directors there and told me their experiences with some of the people they managed) HAD Unlimited Sick / Personal Leave. Imagine my shock as i always was under the impression Banks would have been extremely low in stuff like that but it apparently depends on the type of bank and the size.

The ones that give a large chunk when you first start and then you accrue more every year (standard amount for sick leave but personal leave is separate and you accrue on that too) is the education area.

It seems to all depend on how much the companies want to seem progressive / new age / employee benefits as opposed to old school i guess, I think it also seems to depend on (if they are a multinational company) where their head office / main area stems from. As they bring some of that country's norms into their companies down here.

  • Please do not send your children to child care or school if they are sick.

Keep them at home and care for them and don't make the problem bigger by being selfish.

I recognise that for some this is a bigger sacrifice than others. Contractors have to cover this type of leave out of their own pockets but that is one of the characteristics of contracting that you should be fully aware of when going into such an engagement. Similar if you are a casual employee. Full time and part time employees will normally have personal leave entitlements that cover their own sickness or that of the dependents (i.e. carers leave) . Please use it when necessary. It can't be used for other reasons and just accumulates.

I read another poster mention they have difficulty obtaining medical certificates on the day of sickness. Most HR policies allow 1 or 2 days of absence before a certificate is required. Talk to your HR department if it's hard to obtain one. Personally, living in Sydney, I've never had difficulty in getting a certificate on the day. Pharmacists can also provide medical certificates.

Don't fake a medical certificate. It will come back and bite you at some point. Doing so is normally grounds for instant dismissal by most employers.

  • Or do you call in sick to work and fake a doctor's certificate?

Huh? Why do you need to fake a sickie. Just apply for carer leave and be done with it.

I just call in and say I'm sick, I don't give an explanation or details anymore. They only need to know I'm taking a sick day, not what it's for i.e. mental health/physical health/caring. I know someone who said they were taking a mental health day and now they have to do meetings talking about their mental health… No Thank You!

As long as I'm delivering at work and I'm taking less sick days than most people, my supervisor should be happy. I could come up with some BS excuse but I don't want to have to guess whether they believe me or keep up a rouse and they don't really care why I'm not there either. They just want to know whether they should expect me in and when and that I can meet my expected duties.

I just take days off if I need them, especially if a big deadline is coming up and I'm feeling burnt out, i.e. next week will be crunch week and I know I won't be able to take a day off if I'm stressed so I'll take a day off now to recharge while I can.

I've never had a job that required a doctor's certificate to prove you were sick on days off in literally decades.

    • singular days ok, then my last job got anal about it
arseholes for skimping on taking extra staff too

  • I do as carer's leave… but only if its super bad

I have worked up some 400 or so days of personal/carers leave - now that I have kids I use it whenever necessary

    • Considering there are around 250 working days in a year, you have nearly 2 years.

Ask to wfh. No need to take personal leave

My boss offers 50% Personal Leave cash out on termination if some conditions are met. This is win-win for both employer and employee.

  • It's been over 5 years or so that we don't call it "Sick Leave" anymore, we always refer to it as "Personal Leave". What you have mentioned surely comes under personal leave. Certificate is not required for 1 day leave. Some companies are abusive and exploitative who choose to harass/threaten their employees by asking for a certificate for a day's leave. Nothing much can be done about them other than going through the negative experiences that motivate you to find another job.
