Description

Portal™ is a new single player game from Valve. Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories, Portal has been called one of the most innovative new games on the horizon and will offer gamers hours of unique gameplay.

The game is designed to change the way players approach, manipulate, and surmise the possibilities in a given environment; similar to how Half-Life® 2's Gravity Gun innovated new ways to leverage an object in any given situation.

Players must solve physical puzzles and challenges by opening portals to maneuvering objects, and themselves, through space.

This current promotion's A$1.45 price (-90%) matches the recently concluded Valve Software Autumn Sale A$1.45 standalone price for Portal

Also, all owners of Portal base game are now entitled to get the just-released Portal with RTX DLC for free. News announcement and Portal with RTX description :-

Portal with RTX is a free DLC for all Portal owners developed by NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios. Experience the critically acclaimed and award-winning Portal™ reimagined with ray tracing. Every frame of gameplay is upgraded with stunning full ray tracing, new, hand-crafted hi-res physically based textures, and new, enhanced high-poly models evocative of the originals, all in stunning 4K. In Portal with RTX, full ray tracing transforms each level, enabling light to bounce and be affected by the scene’s geometry and materials. Every light is ray-traced and casts shadows, global illumination indirect lighting naturally illuminates and darkens rooms, volumetric ray-traced lighting scatters through fog and smoke, and shadows are pixel perfect. Portal with RTX is compatible with all ray-tracing capable GPUs.

Look how far we've come you can now run Portal with RTX on a $2.5k graphics card 😅

    • Can it run crysis RTX?

Shame if missed Valve Complete Pack $9.59 (-96%, was $213.29) including Portal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739863

is this game ok for kids? (7-9 years old)

    • +7

I’d say yes. It has some cheeky humour but it’s never outright offensive or inappropriate. There’s shooting but not really violent, Fortnite would be more violent than this and that’s considered okay for kids. Some of the puzzles might be difficult but otherwise yeah, get it.

      • +2

thanks, at that price it looks good.

My 8 year old enjoyed both 1&2, my 11 year old loved it so much he's got merch and had told all his friends. I'm a bit proud since 2 is my fave game of all time

      • +7

Yeah after playing these, my 8 year old bought a $10 orange jumpsuit (google Prisoner costume), and we put the Aperture Science logo on the back and he went to school dressups day and halloween parties with a Wheatley inflatable

      • +2

        This was a triumph

If they are wanting more, check out Portal Prelude (set before the events of Portal 1), which I loved, was a bit harder, but still awesome.

There are also some awesome free DLCs that are fan-made, Portal Stories: Mel and I think there was another one.

I have merch and I'm an adult haha

    • I hope so as my 4yo has played it lol

    • +1

Yes, but they'll never eat Black Forest cake again.

  • +1

I played this near release. I just started a playthrough on the Switch.

Well worth a play through if you haven't already… and a second play if you did years ago.

It's worth noting that this doesn't run on Apple Silicon Mac's(M1, M2) as it is a 32-bit application.

There are workarounds available such as using crossover and the Windows version of Portal.

    • +3

It also won't run on certain Intel versions of macOS where 32-bit applications are deprecated.

    • You can run it through GeForce now, that's what I did on the mac.

    • How/where might I find the PC requirements? Just showed my 8 year old who is eager to play, then saw this comment. We unfortunately have an M1.

      • +1

Scroll down past the About this Game section, you'll see the System Requirements section. Then click on the "macOS" tab. (Just to the right of "Windows", poor colour contrast of text and background makes it hard to see.)

Minimum: OS X version Leopard 10.5.8, Snow Leopard 10.6.3, 1GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8 or higher, ATI X1600 or higher, or Intel HD 3000 or higher Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

        • Thx - I think I lack the right graphic card but managed to follow a YouTube guide & play it with crossover

        • +1

While the game has a 'minumum' system requirements for macOS. It also have a 'maximum' system requirements.

macOS 10.15 and above is a no go for this game, or any other game that is only 32 bit.

    • +1

Yes, was coming here to say the 'macOS' tag in the title is misleading.

      As the Steam page says:

Notice: This product is not compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina or above. Click here for more information.

And the linked page just says this mean only 64 bit apps work on 10.15 an above.

      • Thanks, that's good to know. But I can't see that (I'm on PC). Does that only show if you're on a Mac?

  • +1

Love your profile pic OP 😆

Just tried portal rtx and it doesn’t even get 60 fps at 1440p with all settings on the lowest on a 3080 12gb. Played through the original again though for the nostalgia.

    • +1

doesn’t even get 60 fps at 1440p with all settings on the lowest on a 3080 12gb.

That doesn't sound right. Did you install the new driver that was released yesterday?

      I'm getting 100-110 fps at 3440 x 1440.
110-130 fps if I disable RTXDI in developer settings.

    • Did you try it with DLSS enabled?

TechPowerUp benchmarks showed 55 FPS on a 3080 at 1440p with settings on max, if DLSS is enabled

I was thinking of picking up a cheap 3070 for the hell of it, but feels like this is a tech demo for 4090

      AMD FTW !

      • +1

NVIDIA is ahead in real time raytracing. If the 3080 is struggling, I don't have much hope in any of AMD's line-up doing well

      • Benchmarks I linked above showed 5 FPS on an RX 6900 XT at 1080p

    • Do you have background frame rate cap set in nvidia control panel? If so that affects your frame rate

  • Oh wow.. Totally forgot I had a steam account! Totally forgot I had this and Portal 2!!!!

  • +1

Can't believe they stopped making this game. I loved it.

    • +1

And Half-Life. The apocalypse will arrive before HL3. Sure, there's Alyx but it's VR so doesn't count.

    • Gabe can't count to 3.

    • I still hold out hope they'll release an Orange Box 2 one day, with Team Fortress 3, Portal 3, Left 4 Dead 3 and Half Life 3.
