Using Old 2013 MacBook Air as Monitor

Hi all,

Has anyone used an old MacBook Air (or pro) from around 2012/2013 as an external screen for a newer MacBook ?

If yes, how was this achieved? I’m pretty sure this year of air only had “output” on display.

This MacBook is on its last legs (I.e only works when connected to charger etc.) was thinking of using as a second screen.

Thanks

Unlikely unless you can solder and put an adapter on it

    Chuck it on marketplace
    get $150 for it
    Purchase secondhand screen for $150

Do you have an iPad that is 5th Gen or higher? Some iPads can be used as a 2nd display using the software. However there are plenty of cheap monitors out there. I just purchased a 34" LG from Aldi for $349.

Also, check out Duet Display which will solve your initial dilemma for a monthly fee (billed annually)

  • Why do you want to do that anyway, a giveaway screen on Gumtree or marketplace will be bigger and better resolution. That macbook air can only do 720p, which is a crime in this day and age.
