SEQ: 2 Weeks Free Water. Who Gets The $55 Discount?

Hey brains trust.

Renting in seq and just got our water bill. The landlord received a $55 discount on the water bill for the "2 weeks free water".

This $55 was not passed onto us. Should we be receiving the $55 off our water bill? We tried to negotiate our last rent increase ($70 pw increase) but the owner wouldn't budge.

I've done some quick google for this situation but couldn't find a definitive answer.

So brains trust, who gets the discount?

Edit: my googling skills suck. Thanks to @Simovixet for finding the answer. Still think it's pretty bs though

  • Interesting question since it's a once off offer - do you get a copy of the actual water bill or is it just a generic charge passed on?

    • Yes we are given the full water bill

  • Do you pay the full bill including all usage and account charges?

    • Just the water usage

      • Did the discount come under the usage or accounts section? Basically, was it two weeks free account, or two weeks free water usage? Or was it like 2 weeks off the total cost of the bill?

Your googling skills are weak - answer is explicitly clear here: https://www.rdmw.qld.gov.au/water/consultations-initiatives/…

"You will not receive the discount"

But I also think it's quite crap that the tenants aren't entitled to the discount. Wouldn't the landlord just make a flat profit from this?

      • -2

Profit? After taking into account items from the water bill that are not paid by tenants, highly unlikely

        • I was unaware of items on the water bill which are not passed onto tenants. What items are those?

          • -2

@DiscountForThee: In qld it is only the excess water that is passed on to the tenants and only if the house is deemed to be water complaint. Water connection and supply, wastewater charges, bulk water charges are all paid for by the landlord

@loulou1: Not quite. Bulk water charges and variable usage charges (excess) are paid by the tennant.

In this case $190.47 of a $460.05 bill. Less $55 for the landlord

            • @loulou1:

only the excess water that is passed on to the tenants and only if the house is deemed to be water complaint

IME that is like, every single residence I've looked into over the past half decade. So pretty much every place?

And also not my experience - as the tenant been asked to pay for more than just the 'excess water' :(

Lame. But yes, weak 5 minute gooogling skills entertaining 4 kids on school holidays. Thankyou for your help!

the site does encourage landlords to pass on the discount to tenants

isn't water consumption supposed to be a cost that is passed on, so if they don't incur the cost then they shouldn't be charging?

  • no-one….theyll just up the other usage & service charges to offset the 'discount'
