MyUS Shipping Cost Conversion

I wonder if anyone has similar experience about the shipping cost being a bit higher than anticipated? My bill says ~52USD but my bank account was charged for ~82AUD. No way the conversion rate is so bad considering recent exchang rates right? I actually have a multi currency account and shopping on US vendors used my USD savings directly.

I contacted MyUS support and they insisted that they only charged my 52USD, so I contacted my bank but they also gave me a very vague answer. I'm cotacting my bank again to see what exactly was request to pay, AUD or USD.

Update: so I seemed to find the cause eventually: the default currency of my account on MyUS was AUD. Hence, conversion happened and extra fee was charged. Interestingly, my bank transaction record says the merchant did the conversion while MyUS suppost insisted that they had no control over it. Anyway, it feels like the shady PayPal doing again as the whole calculation and invoice were all in USD, but my default currency was set to AUD upon account registration.

My advice is that please check your account currency before you pay MyUS shipping cost!!

  • Check history in your MyUS if there iis list of things they charge? That extra charge is most likely GST?

    • The history is around 52USD and that was why I asked.
And it is not GST, because 10% of 52USD is 5.2 USD so in total it will make it to 84.4 AUD, while my deduction was around 82 AUD.
I mean, when MyUS says the total payment is 52USD in the final payment summary, why would it add an extra 10% GST?

      • Go to history then click the invoice link, then tell me here what they list under order item? It's a table with column title Order item, description, amount.

        • MyUS said 52USD in the invoice they sent to my email.
          Check the screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/YLCdCht

          • @Freddies: It does says $52 you pay - there is one thing we can check - when you go to your account setting then you click payment method - what do you see as Default Billing Currency? USD or AUD?

            • @foxmulder: It says AUD by default. I guess that was the reason - I didn't know this as my purchases on US websites all used my USD in my multicurrency account.

              • @Freddies: There you go. I thought it was the case. Do you happen to see prices in AUD in MYUS

                • @foxmulder: Nope. The default one was set to AUD and apart from that, nothing on MyUS's website uses AUD as a currency ever.

                  • @Freddies: That's one reason to complain to them to ask for partial refund. I thought it's the entire reason why there is setting for AUD so that you get displayed in AUD - but if you end up not seeing it - then what's the point?

I read this article when I try to check what's wrong with your purchase.

I personally if ordered in Amazon US and get a AUD displayed, I switched it back to USD immediately as I know it means I will pay more than the spot rate.

  • +2

52 United States Dollar equals=77.11 Australian Dollar + transaction fee of $7 looks reasonable

    • Not to mention banks usually charge a worse exchange rate than the actual rate on the day. I'd say $82 is exactly around what I would've expected.

      • Ikr? That was exactly the reason I ditched ANZ and used Citibank instead which doesn't have this greedy conversion cost

    • This is not my case. My account is multiple currency and I paid USD directly for what I purchased for forwarding. So why suddenly there's a transaction fee out of nowhere for the payment to MyUS? I wonder if MyUS converted USD into AUD with their rate and charged me AUD instead.

  • That looks vaguely right. It will be on your bank’s end. If you look at your credit card statement it should lay out the conversion rate and fees.

    • The problem is I can only see a record of 82AUD and there is no USD or currency conversion mentioned

    • Update: now the record is: DEBIT CARD INTERNATIONAL PURCHASE MYUS.COM 941-227-4444 US AUD 81.72 CURRENCY CONVERSION BY MERCHANT

And MyUS support rejected that they did the conversion - also I found my default currency was set to AUD.

      • Don't change anything yet when you lodge complain with MyUS.

        • It doesn't matter as MyUS will keep the extra several sweet Australian dollars and their represenative won't refund it to me
