4k 120hz Capable Graphics Card for My Intel NUC Gen10 Frost Canyon i7

Hey folks,

Struggling to find an answer for this.

Looking to buy an eGPU enclosure, and wanting to choose the right video card to output to my LG C2.

Maybe looking at light gaming, but essentially I would like to be able to smoothly output 4k 120hz video playback.

What's the minimum spec GPU for flawless 4k video playback?

Any recommendation for GPU enclosure also welcome :)

Thankyou wise people of OzBargain!

When choosing a GPU for flawless 4K video playback, you will want to look for a GPU with at least 4GB of VRAM. This will ensure that the GPU has enough memory to handle high-resolution video playback smoothly. Additionally, you will want to look for a GPU with HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 support, as these ports will support the high refresh rate you are looking for. As for a GPU enclosure, many options are available on the market, which ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and budget. Some popular options include the Razer Core X and the Akitio Node.

    • look for a GPU with HDMI 2.0

I believe this is false, and it would need to be HDMI 2.1 (as detailed in another comment below). 2.0 only handles 4k@60Hz

Razer Core X goes for $349

Basically any modern GPU with HDMI 2.0 and at least 4GB of VRAM will be fine for 4k media playback, but where gaming in involved you should buy the GPU that your game recommends.

To get 120hz @ 4K natively on HDMI you will need something with HDMI 2.1 so a 6000 series radeon or 3000 / 4000 series Nvidia GPU.

    • In your opinion is anything over 3060 overkill for video playback? Obviously it will affect gaming going with something faster.

      • The baseline for 4K media playback and casual games would be something like a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti / Super. That's worth around $150~180 on the used market. Some iGPUs even do 4k60hz nowadays.

Any more money that you spend on a better graphics card would translate to higher FPS in your games. So basically it comes down to how much you're willing to spend versus your desired performance level in video games.

      • Yes if you are not playing games then the 3060 is still plenty overkill for video playback. Ideally you would be able to wait for iGPU's to support full fat 120hz @ 4k as you are in a weird place where proper HDMI 2.1 support is only just getting started and you don't have the ability to easily throw a GPU into your system without spending $300+ on an enclosure and another $375+ on a GPU which is getting scary close to the price for a brand new lower midrange NUC if raptor lake supports what you are looking for.

        • My current Nuc +3060 is going to walk all over a newer Nuc +onboard graphics though right?

@kevitkotw: For gaming absolutely, if you are purely looking for a nice, compact media centre only then its a different story.

  • What 4k 120hz content do you have to play back? Most stuff on YouTube is 4k 60hz in which the OLED can do through the app…

    • I don't, but seeing as hdmi 2.1, thunderbolt 3 and the LG C2 all support it, I'm asking the question as to whether it's feasible to make it straight through.

An extra couple hundred on the 3060 perhaps to make games a bit nicer probably is worth it to me.

Minecraft dungeons with the kids demands the maximum refresh rate right? :)

I haaaaate tv apps :( A PC and Chrome is my happy place + Logitech K830.

  • Any good deals on NUCs?
