eBay Sony Lens Return to Seller or eBay

Hi All,

I recently bought a Sony 24mm F1.4 GM lens on ebay from camerahouse. Regular price 1.6K but was 400 off on black friday.

I only took it outside this weekend and realized that it has an issue with extreme slow focussing to the point it is unusable.

I contacted camerahouse and they asked me to send it in for evaluation and they will give me a replacement if it is defective. I have a suspicion that they will just send it back saying that it is normal. (It works almost normal indoors against bright objects but so slow outside. I compared it with my other lenses which are not expensive G masters and they are lightning fast compared to this.)

Now I have 3 options,
1. Send to camerahouse to evelauate
2. Return via ebay as a defective item
3. Return via ebay as a change of mind.

If I send it via ebay as a defective item, do they wait for the seller to evaluate it ? Or can I still do it as a change of mind since I have used it a few times ?

To complicate matters, even if I get a refund, I can't buy a new one for the same price anymore. And I have decided that I don't want to keep this one.

Thanks.

Option 2 will save you a lot of time if it is really defective. Heck, eBay will side with you even if it's not.

  • '2. Return via ebay as a defective item

    End.

I would go for option 1. I tend to trust people do the right thing. BTW I got the same lens and it works fine for me.

Edit: probably also worth record a video of what you believe the symptom is, especially if you are worried about the seller not being able to replicate the issue.

    • Sony 24mm F1.4 GM lens on ebay from camerahouse.
It works almost normal indoors against bright objects but so slow outside. I compared it with my other lenses which are not expensive G masters and they are lightning fast compared to this.

Could be faulty, or individual users expectation

I mean my ef85mm f/1.2L is so slow compared to my nifty-fifty zippy AF

  • Option 2 is the safest and easiest option but means you'll probably get a refund instead of replacement.
Option 1 has a chance of getting a replacement instead of refund but it means taking it outside of eBay so you won't getting the buyer's protection.
It might be possible to try option 1 and if it gets rejected fallback to option 2, but it might take too long so it falls outside of eBay's the money back guarantee period.
Option 3 is just wrong. The product is defective, it's not a change of mind situation. Don't even consider it.

    • With option 2 they'll probably block OP from buying in the future.

  • Im fairly sure that Sony would have a warranty policy where you are not obligated to return it to the place of purchase but any Sony Authorised Dealer/Agent if you feel more comfortable with a local brick and mortar retailer.

Why would a different Sony Authorised Dealer/Agent give money to OP if they didn't purchase the item from them?

      • If it's true that you can take it to an Authorised Dealer, it's probably just for warranty claims. They will probably send it to Sony to get evaluated and facilitate the repair/replacement

      • That would be if the OP wants the item fixed instead of refunded. As im gathering would be OP's ideal scenario as they bought it a discounted rate and if refunded they would be at a loss if they were to re-buy the item.

Do not do option 1 unless you can visit and store and have them inspect with you. Otherwise they just send it back to you after a 10 second (if that) check of the lens. Might even demand you pay return post.

I vote: "Send to camerahouse to evelauate"

  • I guess if you take it to your local store you may be able to compare it to a demo one on shelf assuming there is a demo one? Or maybe a digidirect on a slow day - just to make sure before sending away for inspection.

  • option 1 will lead you to trouble.
You will most likey have to pay for postage, both ways. If it get lost in the mail you're also screwed.

CH, aren't qualifer repaired centre so the best they will do is inspect for any damages that may have occured during postage.

I would give the store a call to get them to outline what they plan to do if you go with option one.

    otherwise option 2

  • Can you go into a store and just ask to try another copy of a 24mm they have on display. If they are not busy and you ask nicely, I am sure they will be happy to oblige.

Do note that sony mirrorless camera stops down the aperture in real time, meaning there is less light hitting the AF sensors and at some point, that will affect the focusing speed.

    • I have a 16-35 f4 and a 35 2.8, both focus in less than half the time of this g master

      • Do you live near any camera house stores. They are all indepentantly owned, but if you can go into one and demonstrate the problem, it is more difficult for them to “check ok”

        • Unfortunately no, the closest is Geelong which is nearly an hour away
