4G mobile modem overheating and restarting

G'day

I've a Telstra 4G mobile modem (the portable sort that runs off a battery) that gets very hot to the touch and restarts frequently under load, I assume it's an overheating issue as when I put it on the PC out-take fan the number of occurances drops drastically.

Can I pickup Telstra www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/663080595434603 or unlocked www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/877984446913925 and swap the sim over? Was hoping the larger footprint will help with heat dissipation.

  • AFAIK you can use either quite happily provided you are using a Telstra SIM for data.

You only need unlocked if you want to use an Optus or Voda SIM.
(note that the first link can also be unlocked if you have the technical will, https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vS8cjZXYvJVuX9u5…)

A better (faster speed) option is the Huawei B818.

    • Cheers for the confirmation and the link, am using a Telstra sim alas may do the unlock anyway to learn something new :)

  • If you don't necessarily require one with a battery, and don't connect to more than 5 Wi-Fi devices at a time, you could pick up one of these instead. You can plug them straight into a USB phone charger or should be able to power with your computer's USB port.

  • Mine does the same thing. I put up with it for a couple of years but it kept getting worse and worse so now I just use a spare phone tethered to my GL.iNet Beryl I got for cheap on prime day. Speeds are just as fast and I don't have to deal with it rebooting constantly.
