JB Hi-Fi BYO Plan Incorrect Billing

Just a PSA for those who recently signed up for JB Hi-Fi BYO Plan with the gift card.

I normally don't check my phone bill and let it do its thing but getting 2 bills in one month had me checking why I'm due for another payment.

Turns out I got double charged for the same billing period because according to Telstra, JB-Hi-Fi billed me in advance when I first joined, then billed me again for the same period at the end of the billing period.

I knew something wasn't right so I messaged Telstra for an explanation. The first rep, despite me asking him whether its normal to be charged twice for the same period, I think he didn't even look at my bills and just said yes its normal. I couldn't sleep on this explanation so i called again. The second rep at first also didn't believe me but thankfully it finally clicked with him and he credited the double charge.

tl;dr: check your bills!!!

  • This plan looks like a terrible deal anyways, what was the incentive to join?

    • Needed a new phone since my iphone X was dying, timing lined up with Woolworth giftcard deal and overseas travel. So i pulled the trigger

  • The new plans are pro rated so there are 2 payments at the start. It would mean at the end of the 12 or 24 months, you won't have a bill.

    • +1

      So my bill breakdown is

      First bill:
one day of usage before my billing period starts - $2.25
      advanced payment for nov10-dec10 - $59

      Second bill
      payment for nov10-dec10 - $59

so i got confused why i got double charged for nov10-dec 10

      • I know as I used to work at JB in sales when they implemented these changes. The billing period dates always got confusing but the way it was explained to me was you wouldn't get a final month bill as you're in credit due to the double payment at the start.

Head back to the JB store and quiz the telco guys there.

        • I think you are right, and the customer's account would just go into credit when they double pay the first bill, and it would come out in the wash at the end. But it doesn't mean you should have to double pay the first bill… thats just plain weird.

        • is this final month credit automatic or depending on what has been paid prior?
thinking if i could double dip this month being credited and the final month too ;)

          • @Dentom: Depends how they refunded your payment for the first month. If it was a straight reversal or if they applied a credit and then refunded you the account balance. Either way why are you trying to dishonestly obtain an advantage here. That’s effd

            • @djsweet: Not really trying but just getting ready to turn a blind eye if it ever happens.

  • Would anyone be able to advise me, I have a current contract with Telstra but also a prepaid sim with Vodafone. Can I port across my Vodafone number and still get this deal as an active Telstra customer?

    • I think it’s fine as long as the number you want to port isn’t from Telstra. By new customer I think they mean new number. But I could be very wrong, best to confirm with the telco staff at JB.
