Auspost Express Shipping Gone down The Drain

Warning for others ordering or using Australia Post express shipping during this time.

Being an OzBargainer I made an eBay plus order to save a few bucks off the Amazon price. The order was via express post and estimated to be delivered 14-16 December I had prepared to expect to receive the item maybe a few business days later with the Christmas rush. The package was received by AusPost on the 13th, hasn't been processed and now estimates delivery for 29th December. I know Prime is having delays too but everything I've ordered with next day or two day delivery has still come in a reasonable time.

TL;DR
If you want something delivered in a reasonable time frame atm don't choose AusPost express delivery.

There are too many different variables and factors for you to claim that. Could be an issue with the package itself, could be the address, the sorting facility, particular staff force, system issue, glitch, backlogs, whatever.

Issues happen with logistics all the time, they're massively complex. Not everyone will have the same good or bad experience.

Yes depending what OP ordered, only certain categories on ebayplus quality for free express shipping (many categories are only regular shipping), and even then I've had sellers occasionally send regular shipping.

At least it's better than Aramex, I have an order that took Aramex 4 days to collect, now 5 days sitting in a sorting facility. Give me auspost regular any day.

      • i have never had a good delivery with aramex, usually two days sydney to melbourne then another five days melbourne to lilydale, i now look for sellers that only use australia post .

      • It was definitely sent express. But yeah i don't recommend Aramex they're the worst.

      • "… I've had sellers occasionally send regular shipping."
That happened to me and I complained to the eBay seller and eBay. eBay said it's not late (as Australia Post changed the expected date after it wasn't delivered by the original expected time). The item had "Free express delivery with eBay Plus" and the seller and I were in eligible metro areas.

I'm having identical issue to op, my EBay Plus Auspost Express delivery was due last Wednesday, but now looking at 'by 29th December'. It's travelling Sydney to Sunshine Coast.

      • Mines Victoria to Victoria lol hopefully it'll get here quicker looking at some other commenters' experiences

It says this on their website

    • On their website cut off date for pre Xmas delivery is:

      Express Post

      19 December 2022

      • -6

They explain the issues with Express post at the moment.

Please note that as more customers opt to use this service, there may be an additional two-day delay to the standard delivery time.

For my state VIC it says : Most arrive within 2 business days. Some items may take 3 business days.

From the 13th to the 29th is a lot more than 3 business days.

          • -5

@yanyan1: I've found most come through closer to the earlier estimate.

  • +4

    It's Xmas what you expect?

    • +9

I expect express post to be faster than standard post still but I guess that's expecting too much

      • It's usually about a day or two faster.

        • I had a parcel sent to a place 40km away December last year Normal Post. It arrived next day. We sent some more a week later to the same person via Express Post, and it took 4 days.

          • +3

@BewareOfThe Dog: I had something come from the US last year.

It took a day to get to Australia from California.

Then it went from Sydney to Adelaide to Brisbane to Sydney before arriving about 10 days later to Melbourne.

            • +1

@jv: I had an iHerb order arrive into Australia Overnight this week.

          • @BewareOfThe Dog: 2 weeks to go 21 klms in the past.. it even went interstate several times in that time…

        • A day or two faster is acceptable if normal post takes 2-3 days.

          • @djsweet:

if normal post takes 2-3 days.

normal post it taking 2-3 weeks

            • @jv: In that case a day or two faster is neither here nor there. It makes express effectively indistinguishable from regular.

              • +1

True… it's not worth paying extra at the moment unless you are sending something from WA.

I believe rail freight is still down.

                • +1

@jv: Agreed. And you bring up another thing that is $%^&ing me off wiht Auspost at the moment. In the case of the rail network being down, how is that the customer's problem. Auspost should just Express everything for no extra charge. Always trying to shift the blame to everyone else, and have everyone else bear responsibility for their problems. What a numpty organisation.

Only so much capacity in the alternate delivery networks. If it was that easy, they would have done it already.

Always trying to shift the blame to everyone else

So Australia Post is responsible for the floods and damage to highways caused by unseasonally heavy rain? Seems fair.

                    • +1

@DashCam AKA Rolts: They aren't responsible for floods. They are responsible for finding a way to deliver your package in a reasonable amount of time and not charging you extra for it.

                • @jv: I think NT is still worthwhile also. Regular post to NT takes 2 weeks at a good time. Most express is arriving within 2 days to Darwin/Alice and 4-5 days for remote.

        • Personally I don't bother, possibly getting it a day earlier wasn't worth the extra money to me via Aus post express (packages basically turn up at the same time for the same money), Strangely Amazon Prime turns up pretty quickly though (and Aus post is the one that drops it off).

I think there is just delays everywhere because of the Christmas rush, my sister's annoyed that a package that's been sitting in Brisbane for over a week now, but you can't help it at this time of year.

      • +4

I can tell you first-hand express post and star-track premium is without a doubt faster and much more prioritised than any other standard post. As Hybroid has stated above many issues will happen in the facilities your parcel could have been damaged, forgotten in a facility or bag, missorted or even the shipping label could have become damaged and may not be able to be scanned. The most likely issue however is human error due to the increased amount of casual staff in facilities with an increased workload currently and therefore more inexperienced staff.

        • +2

Its hardly a one-off. If it was like a 1 in 1000 experience that would be forgivable. But it isnt. Its like 1 in 10 from personal experience.

        • Interesting to hear from an AusPost worker

        • They sent me an email
"Delivery was expected by Wednesday 14 Dec 2022, but unexpected congestion in our network means your item will take a little longer to arrive" so even more people must be sending things than the Christmas increase they accounted for?

          • @yanyan1: I cant speak for other facilities as I don't know their metrics but here in South Australia we have been processing more parcels per day than peak covid times and it has only been increasing in the past few weeks.

            • +1

@ageorge: I'm in SA and our Aus Post parcel deliverer is consistently working late into the evening to get his deliveries done. We appreciate it.

Personally, I have an earlier cut off for online Christmas purchases since Covid, so that I allow a longer lead time for delays. For the odd last-minute purchase, it's click and collect, so you know the stock is there.

I hate the Christmas rush, and usually there is more choice.

            • @ageorge: Hey mate any chance you could advice me on an international parcel coming from Sydney to metro Adelaide. The tracking says In transit to ADL airport but hasn't had scans since then (I thought it would scan through like Chullora, Sunshine or Tullamarine like in the past).
I read on the reddit Auspost got like a new system.

YES, I am really sorry But I have been so desperately waiting for this parcel (probably should have selected the Cainiao Post option only rather than Singpost option which showed earlier Est delivery date)

Can you please if such under 2kg international mails from Sydney (after customs) after supposed to scan at other locations like in NSW, or VIC before scanning up @ an SA facility ?

              Would really appreciate a response,
especially if you know a way to get this earlier

normally dont have issues with Auspost parcels coming from Melbourne (have had some regular post in 2-3 days), but I think sydney takes quite longer ?

Sorry commented here, because I couldn't dm you
              Thanks again much appreciated

I don't see how Australia Post can continue to deliver miserable service on their express post product considering Covid restrictions ceased ages ago. Shouldn't it be back to next day guarantee by now. What a bunch of clowns.

I had an express post delivery take more than a week recently. Most have taken 2-3 days. I have had literally none come within the old next day guarantee. Its like they aren't even trying in the slightest to meet that anymore.

    • +1

I don't see how Australia Post can continue to deliver miserable service

It's owned by the government so they don't care…

    • +3

How? most of the competition is shit too…. so they dont have to try.

      • I think DHL is probably the most reliable but you pay a premium, AusPost express is pretty good when it's not the Christmas rush.

        • Not much of a premium with the now standard auspost prices. And DHL actually deliver, reliably.

auspost is a lottery, measure in weeks, for comparable prices to DHL and 4 days.

Worth checking the next time you have to send a parcel.

    • Noticed any flights being cancelled or delayed lately? Now think about how express post travels and imagine what effect that might have.

      • -1

If Auspost has so much mail that they can’t fit it on passenger planes they should charter some. Or send over some trucks. Plenty of options.

    • I don't see the point in paying for express post, it always turned up at the same time as not paying for it, now EMS is impressive, bloody packages appear one or two days from Japan after I payed for it.

  • -2

    don't choose AusPost express delivery.

oh no, how will AusPost fund the Cartier's!

  • Yep - just had an aliexpress package show up faster than my AusPost express post delivery that was ordered 1 after the aliexpress package.

  • It's a bit too early to get upset about it, the dates you're reading really mean nothing. I've had a couple of packages this month where I received a message saying "your package is delayed…" with an estimate two weeks away, only for it to arrive the next day.

  • +1

estimated to be delivered 14-16 December I had prepared to expect to receive the item maybe a few business days later with the Christmas rush. The package was received by AusPost on the 13th, hasn't been processed and now estimates delivery for 29th December.

Give it time…. I had one like that too, but was delivered a few days ago.

  • +2

Auspost are so far below an acceptable standard I'm not sure they understand what's expected anymore.

I'm sick and tired of it taking weeks for letters and parcels to be delivered between metro areas. Next day is expected level of service auspost; not when you fancy getting around to it. And the prices are massively out of scope with the service delivered. Frankly we should be able to reclaim the full cost if its not there within 5 days - maybe that would get their attention?

I wanted to send a parcel of xmas presents overseas. Not only do auspost think the beginning of Dec is an acceptable last posting date, they want nearly as much as DHL, who still manage to be able to deliver in a week - xmas or no xmas.

    Woeful

  • +1

currently in week 4 of my 3 day Auspost delivery hahaha

    • That's very delayed did you contact them?

      • Tracking update once a week but still 800 km away

  • You said expected date is 14-16 Dec right? Today is not eventhe 17th - will you update us then if you don't receive it by 17 Dec?

    • Yeah I will, was just going off the date they said on tracking.

  • +1

Amazon shipping to WA is awful at the moment with prime. Had a time from of 15th Dec - 8th Feb! And for someone over east it was 15th Dec next day delivery. With prime normally being next day, I'm unsure why it's taking 2.5 months instead of 1 day to get to me..

    • Is that because of the rail disruption? I'm in Vic there's still a lot of 2 day delivery options here, some things are a few weeks or months.

    • Depends where the stock is. If it's in the WA warehouse you can still get next day. If it's anything other than 1 or 2 day ETA it's not in the WA warehouse.

But these super wide timeframes are a PITA, along with the uncertainty of who they will ship with for any particular order. They are being extra cautious with their ETAs though, everything I've ordered lately has arrived well before.

Also appears they are moving stock around between warehouses. I ordered something that had an ETA end of Jan, so also ordered a similar product with an ETA between Dec 12 and Dec 30 just in case. The Jan ETA order sat there for over 2 weeks unshipped, then out the blue yesterday I get notification it's being delivered that day via Flex driver. The Dec ETA order still hadn't shipped (cancelled now)

  • Its gone down the drain? its been decades since it wasnt at the bottom of the drain.

  • Your parcel passing through Sunshine West, Chullora, or Welshpool, is a guarantee of delayed delivery.

Fastest way to get mail from Sydney to Perth is by mailing it to our Singapore office and getting it forwarded on.

    • I'm sure you can DHL anything inside Australia. They are pretty good but at a cost.

  • +1

I literally posted a parcel from Melbourne to nsw express Monday (over counter at a news agent post office) and it got there Wednesday. Don’t think it was picked up until Tuesday as the tracking didn’t change might’ve missed the cut off. I think it really just depends on what you’re sending, where from and to and a bit of luck that it goes in the right truck and doesn’t go for a round trip of the country first haha

    • +1

How is it that they are still advertising hard on the radio for Express Post but still do not offer the express guarantees that they always had. Unethical and scammy. Do not believe any of their claims anymore especially the ones that involve refunds, they will always make your life harder.

I complained to Australia Post about a parcel from Melbourne to Sydney took a week to get to me. Ordered 29/11. Posted by company 29/11. Arrived in Sydney 30/11. Then nothing changed for days so i rang them. First they blamed delays in Melbourne but it arrived in Sydney the day after it was sent. It sat somewhere in Sydney for days before it was eventually sent to the delivery centre at Seven Hills. Frustratingly there it sat there for more days waiting to be logged. The first customer service agent told me they worked on weekends to clear the backlog so it could come over the weekend. Didn't arrive until the afternoon of 6/11. Australia Post contacted me a few days later about my complaint and to see if package arrived. When i said it had but a week after it was sent she said great, case closed. When i questioned the timeframe for EXPRESS post she said that is within their timeframe of 5 BUSINESS days. Firstly she advised they do not process or work over the weekends and when I said it had been 6 days without including the weekend she said we don't include the day it was sent which shocked me. To them taking a week was perfectly fine and within what they declare is satisfactory. The company I purchased from had listed "Express Post 1-2 days". Clearly AP have changed the rules and I don't think many people are aware until you go through something like this. I shudder to think how long it would have taken without paying the extra for faster delivery.

    • +1

The company I purchased from had listed "Express Post 1-2 days". Clearly AP have changed the rules

And they notify their customers of this (sometimes incessantly), so the store you purchased from probably shouldn't have this time frame on their website.

      • +1

I advised them of this so they could change their website and they told me that others customers are getting their orders within 2 days. Not much else I can do except don't expect it that quickly from Aust. Post ever again regardless of what companies are claiming.

        • -1

Misleading claims. The staff told me that they have removed the express post guarantees, so it takes the express route but still can take the same time as parcel or could be longer depending on the network. They just want the extra money and not give any actual result in service for the customers. Now they are heavily advertising express post on the radio.

  • I got a package last week send from Geelong to Melbourne, it was express posted and took 4 days. I know it's supposed to be "next day", but it's Christmas, So I Wasn't holding my breath for snail mail to get through. It was worth paying the extra $5 for express!

  • +1

I had a parcel delivered two weeks ago. The AusPost app is showing it as: “Delayed - waiting to be processed for delivery”. 🤣

  • Since covid i no longer have any trust in expected delivery time. I only buy non urgent items online.

    • 100%. I'm continually amused by threads such as this one.

Want it now? Go to a store and get it. (Support local if you can)
Buy online - take your chances with delivery.

Simple really. It's in somebody else's hands.

  • +1

I do feel certain vendors get priority in the unspoken Auspost queue. Some of the bigger online retailers like Amazon, ASOS, theiconic and such seem to get their parcels delivered much faster as I believe they deal with a lot of the logistics themselves, i.e. sending items from their warehouse to a big Auspost sorting facility directly. Whereas with ebay, you’re invariably gonna get high quantity sellers that are still selling from their home or office, items from these people are gonna take a whole lot longer.

And of course as a seasoned online shopper, don’t even buy anything in December if you want it delivered on time. People are already clogging up the network with interstate Christmas presents.
I have zero expectation of delivery estimates in this period, any disappointment is on me for not timing my purchases right throughout the year. (I shop for Christmas in October/November).
