Garage Door Openers

I have a 15 years old garage door openers "B&D controll-A-Door 4" and I think it is on its way out. There is a lot off slack on the chain and the door fails to open frequently. Not sure will tightening the chain will help and I am worry the chain will snap and scratch my car.

I got a recommendation to install a Commander Elite MS105. Anyone have experience with this model and is it good?

I don't mind spending a little more. What I really want is something strong and reliable where I dont need to worry about it failing. Appreciate any input and recommendation.

I think that's the one I've got. This thing is bloody quiet compared to the 20+ years old B&D thing I had but the remote is expensive and it's already becoming a bit dicey when I press it. No need to adjust the chain anymore which is a bonus and the installer reckons the belt should last pretty much forever.

  • I've got that one. It's great. Quiet, works well.

The falling aspect is entirely down to how it's installed any nothing to do with the product itself

  • How big is the door?

The MS105 looks and sounds awesome - am actually going to install the Chamberlain CS105MYQ at a cousin's property (small single garage door - so the CS105 is overkill but i'd rather overspec it) - it's available at Bunnings for $420 - so around $100 cheaper. It seems identical to the Merlin apart from the remotes and warranty (Merlin provides 7 years, Chamebrlain provides 5 years). I'd also recommend smartening up the motor too - either with the a MYQ connectivity kit (which relies on laser beams to determine if door is open or closed) or a Meross kit (relies on magnets to detect if door is open or closed)

I have 2 roller doors and recently to installed a chamberlain CR855 on one door and the equivalent merlin (MR855) on the other - both work fine, in fact they appear identical apart from branding. They are also compatible with Meross msg200, so now can do away with remotes and rely on my phone.

There are a couple of annoying things with the Meross - the app UI is bad, the unit relies on wifi (and has lost connection once) and I can't part-open the doors through the app - has to be fully open or closed.

    • is it easy to paint sectional garage door? to a totally different colour? if so what price should I be looking at, as opposed to buying a whole new door. (double garage)

      • A re-paint is doable and is easy with the right tools, primer and a lot of patience. Just be aware that a good paint finish will never be as good as a colour bond / powdercoat finsih. If you are able to take the door down and send if off to a powdercoating place - I'd estimate the cost to be around $600 for a double. Not sure how much a painter will charge just to prime and paint, but gut feel is around $500 for double door.

        • Can you buy a nice double garage door installed for less than 3k? Something better than the basic ones?

          • @bigballerbrand: I think so. A basic double door panel lift with motor - installed is between $2,000-$2,500.

  • Merlin is great.

Maybe you could get it serviced?

I put a Chamberlain from Bunnings up (which required removing a very heavy door). The door would'nt roll properly, so I had to get a Garage door company out anyway, which took about 20-30 mins to retension etc.
