Scammer Technique on Facebook Marketplace

I just had an attempted scam on Facebook marketplace just now, be aware, this is how it went down:

I put the ad up last night and I think about an hour later (or immediately, not sure if the ad was still under review by FB) the person Van Moer Patrick messaged me asking if it was still available:

They left immediately after being pushed back on giving an email. I read online that getting your email was one of the common scam techniques, for various reasons.

The red flags I noticed was:

  • Getting a 'driver' to pickup the item. And the weird phrase about the driver not expecting to make a sale(??) - must be a thing in the country the scammer is from.
  • Some replies were immediate, like the two messages after I said the time and payID. I imagine the scammer was using a bot to reply when certain phrases were found. When I asked what the confirmation was for, it took some time - I guess the scammer had to manually look at the message to respond.
  • All replies were fairly quick, within the hour - not worrying in itself but more-so in combination with other red flags
  • Very quick to message after the ad was posted
  • No haggling or asking for more info (The list price was over 1k)
  • Strange profile, very little recent activity, lots of photos and activity in Belgium but many years ago (~2012). No photo of themselves in profile pic.
  • No direct reference to, or discussion about, the item being sold

Be careful out there

        … Da Zuck!

And the drivers he 'employs' are far more invasive than this scammer's

They used scam payid email, there are heaps of them on gumtree/fb marketplace, no one pays upfront then arrange pick up later. It raises a red flag instantly

The e-mail is so they can send you a fake screenshot to say payment made and pressure you to send/release the item urgently while the payment "clears". It never does. People fall for this all the time.

I just had this happen about an hour ago, except a 'sister' was picking it up. No haggling is always a red flag.

No haggling is always a red flag.

It depends on the product and price.

      Recently I got a secondhand Lego AT-M6 for $20. I paid a $5 deposit by PayID pronto.

When I went to pick up the seller said something along the lines of: do you know that there's a lot of demand for this? He must have been inundated with buyers after.

He also gave me for free two other smaller sets which will more than cover the price.

      • Good to hear you got a good deal.

In my experience there are always people haggling, I have put a desk up for $10 before and still had people haggling for it. I wanted to get rid of it fast but I should have priced it higher so I didn't have 10 people throwing times and dates at me and asking if I deliver.

The particular thing I've got listed today is $300 so I would expect haggling, but I've got two of the scam messages already.

God this scam is as old as time itself and people almost still fall for it 🤦

    • No kidding.

Buyer: Hi, I work on an oil rig
      Seller: Eww, go away scammer!

      Next minute, same seller
Buyer: Hi, I work on an mining site
Seller: Thanks for the payment screenshot, your courier just picked up the item btw.
