BankVic account fleeced $280 - Resolved

Check my accounts daily and saw a $280 Coles Online purchase from Rowville.
I’m in Vietnam.
Aware I can probably order online from here.
Rang Bank Vic from Vung Tau and spoke to a person.
Said there was a bit of this with Coles and “I may get my money back”.

Dunno how anyone could get the 3 numbers off the back cos it’s only used for ATM cash here. All I use that card for.

Why can’t banks have an “opt in” 2 factor authorisation eg phone/email and the order is pending until verified.

Can’t be too hard - the BankVic guy sent me email code while chatting to verify me.

I carry second phone with 0z sim for Big 4 bank to send code to verify some transactions.

Should be mandatory on all transactions above $20.

    That's probably the delivery fee

The order is a box of tissues to ease the pain of the delivery charge 😂

      JV… you've done it again!

If it were mandatory on all transactions above $20 just imagine the additional wait times everywhere as people stuffed around on their phones…

  • Make it “opt in”

  • Should be mandatory on all transactions above $20.

    Outlier edge case.

  • Can’t be too hard to organise secondary authentication.
I’m talking to the bank security guy in Melbourne and he sent a code to my “account attached email” to ensure it was me.
    Took 20 seconds to Vietnam.
The goods/service provider can do it in 20 seconds as well.

When I transfer my money in my name from my Oz bank account to my BankVic account it can take up to three business days. Yet fraudsters are facilitated instantly.

Did you get the flybuys atleast?

I prefer convenience. 2 factor gets annoying after a while

    • And you need every second when it's a flash sale or price error

Wifey spending up big for Christmas while you're gone?

Just incidentally, you can't do a Coles online order from overseas. We tried to do this to organise a delivery for the day we got back from overseas so we didn't need to go shop ourselves - but it detected we weren't in Aus and wouldn't allow the checkout.

    • VPN?

      • Yes that would probably work but I don't run one on my phone and didn't want to fap around with a VPN just to do a Coles order.

  • If you don't save your bank details on the Coles website and put them in manually every time, they text you a confirmation code (psudo 2 factor identification) before they will put the purchase through.

Thx for input - appears my $280 has been RE credited to my account
