  • Hi OP,

What exactly does this do? I currently have a smart garage door opener and a smart plug for my GPO to schedule my christmas tree lights, but that's as smart as my house or I get haha.

    • It’s a security alarm, so if someone enters your home you’ll get a message to alert you. I bought it since in my areas a couple of people have had intruders break in while sleeping …..
The humidity and temperature sensor will tell you temperature and humidity in the room where installed.

Been always using Wifi-enabled smart IoT.

Any one has experience on all three tech, Wifi vs Zigbee vs Bluetooth Mesh?

    • I am not an expert but my understanding is that the gateway is connected to wifi, while the items connected to the gateway via Bluetooth. So the information gets sent to the gateway and then via wifi to the app.
In addition I connected my original camera which is wifi (I don’t remember what app I used for that but tried the Kogan app and it worked)

Most budget Smart wifi gadgets are powered by Tuya. Kogan SmarterHome app is a branded white-label Tuya/SmartLife app.

        • Cool thanks for the info I’ll add to the post

  • The small sensors are powered by CR2 battery, which is too expensive at most places. It's considered cheaper to buy more packs rather than battery alone.

    • Oh wow good to know! How long would a battery last?

I've never owned any Bluetooth Mesh IoT devices or powered by CR2 battery, hence I asked my question above if any one has experience with all 3 tech.

        • No worries thanks

Being bluetooth and at a guess battery would last perhaps a year (or more) based on all my existing (not Kogan) devices. Batteries are cheap to buy online so not a big deal. The downside is Bluetooths limited range as smaller battery devices do not act as repeaters for other devices further away. All these need to be in range of the central hub. Not a big deal if your home isn't large.

    • Good point.

Maybe buy extra sets of these whole systems and sensors become disposable like cheap printers did.

Seems like cheap CR2 batteries are about $5 each, but brand name ones are $15 each.

It is very easy, with $10 or less piece of hardware, to knock WiFi 2.4GHz devices off a network, meaning no security alerts and in the case of cameras, no video. I haven't looked into BlueTooth, 5GHz WiFi and Zigbee, but more than likely there is an option there as well.

  • Sorry noob question - I got some smart LED downlights from Kogan, I already have the gateway from Xiaomi in this deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/741013), do I still need this Kogan gateway? Thanks

    • Do the downlights connect to the Kogan or Xiaomi? The pir, temperature sensor and door contacts are only Bluetooth as far as I know, hence they would need to connect to the Kogan smart gateway. But you should be able to add the downlights too.

      • I have added the LED downlights to the Kogan home app, the LED lights are bluetooth mesh ones, I havent tried connecting them to Xiaomi gateway yet…

    $10.99 now

  • It looks as though the lights can be used as repeaters and they have four packs for just $5

    • There's smart coloured lights available for the same price too

    • Shit I paid $10 few days ago. Grrr

      • As someone mentioned above, the starter kit is only 10.99 now. You should update the post.
I bought one. Thanks for sharing :)
