CHOICE examines foreign transaction fees

Just out today. Interesting discussion of foreign transaction fees and a comparision of cards' exchange rates to mid-market rates. 28 degrees card looks quite good

Nice confirmation on the 28 degrees card, although it makes no mention of the Citibank plus account which I found to have similar rates (its a debit card) and no account fees. (found out about this at my usual bargain site!!!)

Having both I use the Cbank card for cash advances and the 28 Degrees for credit purchases, that way I dont take out cash when the 28 deg card is in negative territory and avoiding the fees that incurs. I know I could manage it better but why bother when both are very similar in rates

    BTW thanks for the post

    • Thanks for that Citibank tip. It's a Visa card so will be a good complement to 28deg which is MC. Rarer now, but it used to be that sometimes Visa and sometimes MC was more prevalent in places.

  • Great article. I recently transferred a decent sum of money overseas (over $100,000) - and noone could explain to me how things worked. I spoke to quite a few industry experts at all major banks and some not so major banks. I can't believe how little everyone knew.
The only good news for me was that I picked the highest exchange rate in 20 years - purely by accident. Let's just say that I would get well over $10,000 less if I transferred today.
If you happen to be going overseas, the best way i've found to get a good exchange rate is with cash at a street stall. This is particularly true for asia.

  • I just applied for Bankwest's credit card because it had no foreign transaction fees, but I haven't taken the exchange rates into account, seems like Bankwest (CBA) is a rip off?!
