Filters for Ceiling Air Diffuser

Hi

We have this type of air diffuser on our bedroom ceiling:

As you can see in the pictures, there is nothing between the duct and the diffuser so lots of times we have seen small spiders crawling out of it and lately I have had hay fever and it feels like there’s a lot of dust coming out of it so I’m wondering if there is any kind of filter that we can add to it so all the dust and small insects are blocked out?

I have found air vent filters in Bunnings for rectangular vents that are probably for the floor vents, but I haven’t found anything for the square ceiling area diffusers.

Placing something in there may disrupt airflow affecting your cooling and heating efficiency. It may have a detrimental effect on other rooms as well causing extra airflow or messing up the temperature.

    • Hmm what do you do about the dust allergens then? Air purifier?

      • Have you considered duct system cleaning?

        • Yes, i did but looks like it costs $1k or so. Do we have to do that or get the landlord to do it if its been a few years?

      • No idea. We don’t have ducted and allergens arent generally an issue. Just want you to be ware that it may not be as simple as putting a filter on.

What you probably want to do is to clean the system and filter the air entering.

  • The filtration is on the return vent side and it should be a closed system. If bugs are getting in it's become unsealed somewhere.

Climb into the ceiling and make sure everything is wrapped up tight with duct tape and there are no gashes anywhere.

If it's an evaporative system you would need to consider the roof box too, these are far less of a closed system.
