Surface 4 15 AMD vs Intel NUC M15 Laptop, Which would you pick?

Hi Brain trust,

I am kinda computer illiterate so I need help deciding between these two (or any other suggestions).

Looking for a personal/work laptop 15 inch that is lightweight and portable, and has great battery life.

It is mainly for we browsing, but Im one of those guys that has 20-30 tabs open at once, as well some downloading, youtube and skype for work. I bought the Lenovo E15 AMD not long ago but retuned it as performance was sluggish and battery was not ideal.

So right now Im tossing up between Surface 4 15 AMD R7/16/512 ($1456 up until tomorrow) or Intel NUC M15 i7-1165G7 16/512 currently for $1179 but can wait for the next deal (esp when 1TB is on sale or i7-1260P processor, assuming that's better?). There's also a NUC M15 i5-1135G7 16/512G REFURB for under $800 but will need to see condition of refurb (or should I stay clear from all refurbs?).

Ideally I would like a numberpad, but I dont use it as much nowadays so unless a better system comes along with the numberpad and similar price, I think I will stick with either of these two.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON WHICH YOU WOULD GET, assuming I can get NUC M15 closer to $1000, and which system overall is better. Thank you!!!

When looking into laptops I favour decent not glued together bits, I look at hardware manuals, youtube videos for upgradable ram and SSD. otherwise you are LOCKED in forever with no where to move.

in other words, neither of these seems to have upgradable memory, also in what way was the lenovo sluggish, did you do a reformat, monitor temps to ensure appropriate cooling? did you check SSD speed was normal, cinebench scores, and that battery life mode wasnt on.

    • Just to add "key words like "soldered ram" means fixed can't change or increase

  • i7-1260P wait for this on boxing day. Shouod be 1200s. I've got one at the post office so can report back by the weekend. Newer processor, more ram and 1tb storage and I'm in the same boat as you. Work laptop/expensive music organiser

    • Yeah would love to hear what you think once you get it. Thanks

      • I still haven't opened it yet but will

      • Opened it. Feels like a Mac with windows 11.

Anything but a Surface, I've had terrible luck with their tablet line-up and imagine the notebooks wouldn't fare much better (Surface Go webcam wouldn't work out of the box, Surface Pro 5 just died and wouldn't turn back on one day) and surprisingly being from Microsoft the only recovery image they offer is the version of Windows it ships with, so if it came with outdated 1803 then that's what the recovery image will give you, meaning requiring a practically new version upgrade to get it up to modern standards.

How long did you have it for? And did you work out what happened to it?

  • A couple of years, research online said it appeared to be a common problem with one of the accepted solutions being to use rubber bands to hold down the power button for days at a time, that one didn't work for me. Others suggested "burping" the device but that didn't work for me either
