Creaky Floorboards under a Carpet

We just moved into a rental and realised that the floorboards in all three bedrooms, which are all carpeted, creak like crazy. We had noticed a few creaks during the inspection and having lived in worse rentals in the US thought we might be okay with them.

But the creaky floorboards are getting to me, and I was curious if there are any solutions to reduce the creakiness. Also, can these be fixed? We are willing to spend some money on these and also understand that we’ll have to get the landlord to sign-off on the repairs. Any tradies here who can give an approximate cost to get these repaired? I found the squeak no more product on eBay but don't want to risk by doing DIY repairs.

  • The hack job is get some talcum powder or wd40/degreaser on the gaps.

    • They are carpeted so that's not an option

Have to peel up the carpet on one side

        Lift the carpet up first!

  • The other option is it you can get under the house, and tap those packing things where the floor creaks

Unfortunately the bedrooms are on the upper level and we can't access the joists

  • Locate the joists and bang in some thin nails at the squeaking spots. Then use a centre punch to drive the nail through the carpet until it pops back up. This will last a while but the only long term solution is to rip up the carpet and use screws.

  • i used hack job watered down pva glue when i was selling. worked wonders for the few months needed.
