How to Tell if a Router Is from The UK - Amazon Opened Box

Hi everyone,

I just received an Asus RT-AX53U router that I bought opened box from Amazon for $89 (yeah it was in special today at $65 new, damn!). I noticed that it comes with UK adaptor, this has got me thinking if the person that previously had it had bought it from the UK and then realised that it is not the best choice and therefore returned it.

I wonder if anybody would be so kind as to tell me how I go about finding out if the router is actually from the UK or Australian stock.

Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to provide me.

Cheers.

When you boot it, it plays "'ello Gov'nor" through it's speaker

UK moulded adaptor could mean it's from Amazon UK, but if you are happy with the price you paid and happy with using a UK->AU adaptor then no big deal

Original purchaser may have bought from UK as it was cheaper (as sometimes things from Amazon UK are when compared to Amazon AU), and returning it because it's incompatible with their needs rather than returning because it was explicitly from UK.

Buy it at $65 with that deal you found and return the unit you bought at $85. Instant $24 in your pocket.

Unfortunately for the OP, the $65 deal sold out. If they return it, there is nothing for them to repurchase.

They'd tell you at least if its covered under Australian Warranty?

    Or check here

If it pronounces itself as "rooter" then it's from the UK. If it says "rowter" then it's a US model.

So is "rooted" an OZ model?

      • +2

Either that, otherwise 'carked' or 'munted'

from what I have been reading here, UK routers are not as good when it comes to wifi strength as Australian routers. That is why I am trying to figure out where it comes from.

Would they not come from the same Chinese factory?

      • Same factory, different department.

      • Yes same factory, but different bands and legal frequencies in different countries.

    • +2

I am getting neg, you can see frequencies for the United Kingdom (100) and Australia (200)… Ignorance is bliss.

And that's why most routers have choice or "Regulatory Domain" where you can select which frequencies and powers are allowed in particular region.

  • Do you know where it was "shipped from" and "sold by" as displayed on the Amazon page you bought it from?

      Sold by Amazon Australia Warehouse.

      • You bought it from amazon.com.au , but this does not mean it was sold by them or shipped by them as this info is on the page you bought it from.

My experience with ASUS routers has been that they all come with multiple power adapters for different countries, my GT-AX1100 from JB-HiFi & GT-AC5300 from Umart both came with multiple adapters.

  • I wonder if anybody would be so kind as to tell me how I go about finding out if the router is actually from the UK or Australian stock.

they are all the same stock. just different firmware.

That is true, but my understanding is that they are region locked.

It doesn't matter anyway, once Asus stop updating it, you can use Openwrt and keep it running pretty much indefinitely.

FYI I've bought plenty of routers from the UK, and they've worked here in AUS just fine.
