Recommended Car Rental at LAX?

Travelling to USA for 2 weeks in February and looking for a car rental with good reviews and reasonable prices. I'm not an expert are renting cars either so please give me some advice.

I've come across Kayak but I feel like the prices are too good to be true. Please give me recommendations cause every car rental place just seems to have very negative reviews.

  • I booked directly through Enterprise who I thought was much better than Avis. (I used Avis from Vegas to LAX) and Enterprise from Chicago to Detroit and again from Orlando to Tampa.

Honestly, they will all have crap reviews because no one ever reviews a good time they got a car haha.
Just make sure your travel insurance covers you for everything. I did have a good experience with Enterprise so they are my best option.
I always avoid third parties when it comes to rental cars because they (rental car companies) will use that as an excuse when something goes wrong as opposed to you holding them to account by saying you went directly through the company.

    • Is it possible to have some sort of car insurance on your travel insurance so you dont have to pay for the car rental insurance? Apologies I'm a noob and rarely travel lol

      • Honestly it will come down to what your travel insurance will cover etc.

I do not believe I had car insurance because my travel insurance covered me for the excess of that component.
Just make sure you have travel insurance to cover it. I think the with the car packages I had 5 years ago, it automatically came with it because of the car I was hiring.

haha dw, your not a noob. I have done this a few times now and even I still worry when renting lol!

Correct me if I'm wrong, in US cars for international travellers comes with insurance and for US residence doesn't but they can use their own car insurance. Travel insurance only cover the excess.

  • I've used ladybug.com which is a car rental aggregator site.

had good results with that in the past.

last time I was in LA I used Turo .

the only thing with Turo is that it is not a car rental company but "airbnb" for cars. so car rental excess is not covered by credit card/travel insurance. hence you should consider the amount of excess when searching for vehicles.

you need to travel a short distance to the car "depot" - which is located behind the Custom Hotel at 8639 Lincoln Blvd. here's a link describing it

I have been seeing Turo but not sure if it's trust worthy, it just feels weird to be using someone else's car.

      • Yeah, i can dig that. The guy i got my car through seemed to have a few listings so it wasnt really "his" own car. I had it for 2 weeks. It was 3 or 4 year old hyundai. It was the least expensive option at the time.

  • I use sixt most of the time quite cheap.
Just check the tyre tread before you leave once I had a tyre which had virtually no tread had a puncture and had to go back to get a another car.

    • Is sixt's system still down? Everything took hours when we went through Sixt in SF and Florida back in June because it was done with pen and paper. The cars had so many scratches and marks that weren't on the report either, and it took them I think 3 months to actually charge us.

In the US many domestic travellers can use their own insurance whereas international renters have to acquire their own. Given you are doing two weeks it is a long time for something to happen to the car so consider insurance plus excess reduction.

Thieves target rental cars for the luggage.

Also research how the 4 way stop works. Apparently a lot of overseas drivers come to grief on those.

  • Had a good experience with Enterprise in LA. I would stay away with U-Save.

  • I travel to the states regularly and use Enterprise. New, clean cars with plenty of choice. The rates are competitive and like most rentals they offer insurance. I always take out insurance, Americans are quite fond of suing everyone, so wouldn’t rent without it.

    • Would it be better if I just got my own insurance, for example, on RentalCover.com it seems like I save money instead of going with he car rental service insurance.

  • I personally like to just go with the car rental company. In my opinion it’s one less middle man if something goes wrong, you’re not trying to get blood out of a stone both ways. I always do Loss, damage waiver and extended protection for liability. I haven’t used rental cover myself so can’t comment on what they offer.

  • If you have a Costco card, check rates here:
    https://www.costcotravel.com/Rental-Cars

Almost always, the car rental company will check your card at pickup fyi (so make sure you bring it)

I used to rent cars frequently in the US 10 years ago, and never had issues with 3rd party websites (like Expedia). Not sure if current, but also check discount codes on here:
    https://www.rentalcarmomma.com/

I always went for the cheapest rate.

  • I have heard good things about the Turo car rental app. I think its a bit like Air B&B for cars. App is rated highly. I'm going to use it for a trip to Canada in March.

    • How does it work? Would I have to arrive to the persons house to get the car?

      • For a fee they can have it at the airport for you. App is free, they have cars in Australia. Check it out.
