Apple Gift cards adding to Apple wallet/account

So I've got some apple egift cards which can be used for any type of device purchases. I'm wondering if I can add the balance to my Apple account? I heard somewhere that once it's added to your apple account, you can only use that balance for app store purchases and itunes etc (not devices and hardware). Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks.

The reason why I'm trying to do this is because my online apple order exceeds the maximum of 8 gift cards.

Thanks!

You can buy devices (Macbook, ipads, iphones etc.) with your Apple account balance.

You can buy devices (Macbook, ipads, iphones etc.) with your Apple account balance over the phone or online.

You cannot use Apple account balances for instore purchases at physical Apple stores (at least not in Australia at this stage).

You can add Australian Apple gift cards (and App Store & iTunes gift cards) to an Australian Apple account by following these steps, and you can use that balance to pay for items on the Australian Apple Online Store.

You can have up to AU$4,999 on your Australian Apple Account Associated Balance at any one time.

You can redeem the balance in conjunction with up to 8 Australian Apple gift cards in one online transaction on the Australian Apple Store.
