Pickles car auctions

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has had any experience with Pickles car auctions in Melbourne. The car I'm looking at it 'fixed pricing' so I'm assuming that it's just like a dealer? I know that the auction cars can't be test driven etc, but what about fixed price? Also, are you able to get the car checked out by a mechanic? What would be the best procedure for it (RACV service?)

The car I'm looking at is an ex-Corporate 2010 i30 with 40,000km. Seems like a good option for me, and not too sure about how to go about getting it checked first

  • Hi Kiz,
a friend bought a 'fixed-price' car at Pickles SA. Was an ex-lease one. Pickles didn't give a normal warranty on it though - the warranty was through a third party - and when I researched the warranty at the time it seemed a bit suspect. They said to ALWAYS contact before repair(or there would be no cover etc). The Pickles guys there were good to us BUT you cannot take the car offsite (no drive test) & it makes it hard to get the car checked.

If you want to go ahead with it I suggest you do all the normal things - check the car history(encumbrances etc) check the service history, look for signs of crashes etc. We went in there multiple times When they weren't busy during quiet times -not near auctions, closing time…. We treated them well and they responded in kind. Remember though - they are there to sell the car - so don't just trust them.

    Friends car goes well….

  • Try Manheim.

  • I hope you realise that the fixed price cars can be purchased at their auction as well?
There will be a fee on top of the sale price.
You usually can get the same car at a dealer for the same price as their fixed price plus fee.
They will take trade ins. Get a valuation certificate before the auction.
I purchased a car for my wife at the local not pickles auction and they let me drive it.
Usually it you want the full services of a used car lot then that is the way to go.
A lot more is explained in full on their site.
Call them if there is more you are unsure of … the Pickles place here is very helpful.
    Good luck.

  • ex-Corporate 2010 i30 may be code for ex-Rental car

How many corporations use i30's, the car rental companies do a lot.

    • That was my first reaction too. The i30 is a common rental. Is it red?

    • Quite a lot do, but I agree rental is still likely.

  • Look in the books in the glove box and the original owner should be on the inside cover/first page, if there are no books then you need to judge the risk you are willing to take (eg how far below market value is it). redbook.com.au should give you a price guide, needless to say the more risk you are taking the cheaper you want it.

  • The books are located in the office. I have bought several cars through Pickles in Melbourne via fixed price and also auction. Have never had any issues with them. JUst check the books to see who had the car before.

Some of their fixed price cars are still quite cheap compared to dealers but some are similar prices. I purchased a Ford Territory fixed price and even after putting 20,000kms on it, I can sell it for more than what I paid for it plus the fee.

    • Although it may pay to google the owner. The books dont always state Hertz corp Avis etc, they are a holding company/licensee or something like that.

      • The ones I have seen had the rental company listed as the previous owner

        • Changed my comment to say "dont always" as I recall when waiting for the wife shopping, reading the rental car manual and it was stamped with some "nominee" company as being owner. Thanks

  • Have had bought an ex-Europcar rental through another auction some years ago. Don't worry, they aren't as bad as you think they are though the factory warranty (if still within the period) will most likely be invalidated due to the fact that they were previously rental hires.

  • Hey guys, just wanted to say a big thankyou for your advice etc on the car. The car was a silver 2010 sx model with added options (rims, cruise control, climate control, fog lights etc). The car was advertised at $13,800 and after transfer fees, stamp duty, years rego, $279 mechanic check, it comes to about $15,500.
I had an external company do checks on the car and although they can't physically take the car out to do proper tests, the tests they could perform appear to be fine, no signs of any accidents (a few stone chips, but nothing to worry about). Biggest thing they mentioned was to get it a good detail and there isn't anything wrong with it.
The car had done 41,000km and had just been services 2,000km ago. Was a corporate car for an 'Adult Education Center' company out in Colac, so most of the km's will be country km's.

I was prepared for it to go a bit higher than the $15,000 I was looking at, so I'm happy with the result. Have laid down the deposit and will hopefully be picking it up sometime this week.

Thanks again for all your advice, greatly appreciated!

    • it was auto right?

      • yep, auto
