Fuel Tank Forcibly Opened & Drained at Melbourne South-East Railway Station - Please Help

Hi everyone,

Tonight my car was targeted and my fuel tank was drained at a south-east Melbourne railway station.
This occurred between the hours of 4:30pm - 9:30pm tonight (Wednesday 28/12/2022).
The offender appears to have pried opened my fuel flap and proceeded to open my fuel cap and drain the fuel.

The station is new and does have quite a number of cameras. I tried to seek the assistance of a PSO (Protective Services Officers) to see if they could review the cameras but there were no PSO's available - I was under the impression that PSO's were to be available while public transport is still in operation (eg. until the last train and/or bus departs/arrives at approx 12am-1am)

The offender took off with approx 45-50 litres - I had filled my tank only days prior (Yay me!)

I have called the non-emergency police line and have a case number.

Is there anything my Full Comprehensive Car Insurance can do in this situation or is it just a matter of taking it as a (profanity) life experience and move on?
I have never had this happen so your feedback is most welcome (and appreciated)

The funny part is it's my birthday today, and I had dropped my phone (screen now no longer works) so this is the icing on the cake for me (Yay me!)

  • The Stoic response would be not that you lost a prized posession being expensive fuel. But you letting it get to you.

In future only fill your take to half full so your thief will only fin disappointment. And also fill you tank with cheaper diluted ethanol E10.

You cannot lose what you do not have. Better yet get on a push scooter and forget the car.

  • years ago my family owned a car with no lock and release on the fuel door. we parked it outside without fuel for a year before selling it to the junk yard. there was this guy that would come after dark and try to siphon petrol every week. If I knew dad was selling it I would put some interesting stuff in it. :D

  • Get your own back and put sugar in the tank before they come to siphon it.

  • Thanks for the comments guys. Some were helpful, some were interesting…
Considering getting a lockable fuel cap, although I don't plan on parking at a train station ever again (This would be my second time parking at a station ever, first one was at a station on the Frankston line!)
