Advice on CPU+MB Upgrade, Please

Hello, looking for advice on how to upgrade my gaming PC.

I'm old and not that tech savvy, have no idea what the sockets are and which MB will support them, however can assemble everything with the help of Youtube/manual. Alternatively happy to pay $50-100 or so for someone to do it for me.

I believe I have an OK video card and case/PSU doesn't look that bad, so with that in mind my budget is around $500-1000.

Not going to play crazy FPS games, it's Skyrim, GTAV, Fallout most of the time. Maybe Cyberpunk some time next year.

My current config:

Antec 300 case with Corsair 650W
Asus H170M-E D3 Intel H170 Motherboard
Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz 6MB LGA1151 Skylake Boxed CPU
32 gb of Ram (4 planks of 8 each)
MSI GTX 1660 Ti 6GB

Ideally, I'd like to keep my PSU, video card & ram and just get a new motherboard, cpu & cooling stuff, but open to any recommendations (in case my PSU is not powerful enough or MB won't fit into the case or there is a new amazing quiet case that I absolutely have to buy etc).

I'm kind of Intel fan and had bad experience with AMD years ago. Oh and if Motherboard has in-built WiFi module this would be really great.

Any recommendations?

Edit: It seems that I need a new RAM as well. Will 16GB be enough these days?

If you're updating the Motherboard/CPU, the RAM will most likely need to be upgraded. Your current RAMs are DDR3, and will need to updated to DDR4 or DDR5 (depending on the motherboard/CPU you decide).

    • Can I do this later? I mean will my old DDR3 memory work with the new MB?

  • Regarding the Intel vs AMD,
Mainstream platform from Intel 2007 was Core 2 Quad —-> 2017 Core i7 Quad core (10 years no improvement)
AMD Mainstream platform from 2016 - 2023 —-> AMD FX Quad Core with two integer units per core —> AMD 16 core Ryzen

    ALSO

Intel from 2007 needed a new motherboard every two years, where as AMD you could go from AM2 —> AM3 use same motherboard with AM3 chip, then upgrade to Ryzen on a new motherboard and platform and then upgrade to latest Ryzen with bios update

Eg. 2007 go for cheap M61PME AMD Motherboard with X2 4400+, then upgrade to phenom II X4 955 in 2011
then upgrade to ryzen 2017 Ryzen 1700 and B350 Motherboard then upgrade that to 5800X3D in 2022

    AMD 4 CPUS 2 Motherboards DDR2 and DDR4 (am2+ —> am4)
    vs
    Intel 4 CPUS 4 motherboards, DDR2,3 ands 4 Types (775, 1155, 1150?, then 1700 sockets)

Also AMD Cooler is compatible since 754 socket almost 20 YEARS same CPU Cooler

Furthermore Intel uses a lot of AMD Tech, Ideas in their CPU
    * Onboard Memory Controller
    * X86-64
    * More then 4 cores on mainstream platform
    * Overclocking of memory on lower motherboard (11th gen was not allowed)
    * Soldered IHS (they used to glue them)
    * DDR —- Intel went with RAMBUS (must populate in pairs and also very expensive) in P4 before going with DDR later

    More reasons for AMD.
    Support underdog
Sending a message to Intel that they need to make their platform more open and increase longevity
Supports ECC Memory on normal motherboards
    Ensuring competitive
AM5 platform longevity vs intel platform
    Better and superior platform
Better CPUs, less heat and lower power consumption

    So in ten years

  • Another source of idea is to go through other people’s recent built including your GFX

    https://au.pcpartpicker.com/builds/#g=438

Then use the website to look up cheapest price for the MB/CPU/RAM they used.

You could also look up bundles sold by shops. For example

    https://computers.scorptec.com.au/search?isort=price&lbc=sco…

A cheap combo within your budget is this $546 bundle

    https://www.scorptec.com.au/bundle/cpu/intel-socket-1700/155…

    • Intel Core i5 12400F Desktop Processor,
    • MSI PRO B660M-A WIFI DDR4 Motherboard,
    • Corsair Vengeance LPX Ryzen 16GB (2x8GB), PC4-25600 (3200MHz) DDR4

Edit: replaced example as i misread your budget was under $500

  • upgrade my gaming PC
I believe I have an OK video card and case/PSU

I'd like to keep my PSU, video card & ram and just get a new motherboard, cpu & cooling stuff

What is your true purpose of upgrading ? If it's just for fun hobby, then go for it.

Else if you're not upgrading video card, i won't blow on new cpu/mobo/ram as it all comes to waste, you won't utilize much of the extra performance from the upgrades.

Might as well just plonk in a used i7-7700k / 7700 vanilla to upgrade the cpu alone, but don't overpay for them though. Take your time hunting down cheap ones, should be plenty as they lost their value upon mass flooding of used business PC with 7th gen CPU gets replaced/upgraded.

And when you're done with this old rig and got sick of your cash, then you can splash on a complete new rig. on ddr5 platform with next-gen cpu / video card + PC VR headset for that entirely new experience, if this all fits your appetite that is.

Note that your ddr3 ram 8gb x 4 sticks still worth quite some money there, so don't throw them for cheap. It will cover ddr4 ram costs easily if you ever wished to go for the system upgrade route.

    • My old PC is on its last leg, as it seems. First hdd crashed, then it refused to start normally, then another hdd crashed, CPU fan is making bad noise, I'm basically sitting and waiting for it to die. It's more than 5 years old, so it's time, I guess.

Note that your ddr3 ram 8gb x 4 sticks still worth quite some money there, so don't throw them for cheap.

Thanks, will see if I can get a DDR3 MB alternatively will ebay them.

  • If you are on a ddr3 computer and you want to upgrade to ddr4 or ddr5 you should update your whole computer.

The psu is so old it could go at any minute, and when it dies you dont want it taking out the rest of your new components with it.
Also as a psu ages its efficiency decreases, meaning the power draw of your new system will be too much for the old psu to handle, its only a matter of time till it blows.

    • Good point, thank you. Seems like I need a whole thing.
