Advice on "Gaming" Video Card for Core X used with Intel Gen 12 Laptop

Hello,

Looking for advice on purchasing of a (gaming) video card to install on a Core X. Tried to go through the forums and reddit for advice to avoid an overkill for the Core X but was unable to find a "definitive" (general consensus) answer regarding what would work best in regards to graphics, bottlenecks and return on value.

This is for gaming on a laptop (Riot games, COD and eventually Diablo 4).

The laptop is using a gen 12 intel chip with TB4.
The monitor is a Dell 3422DWG (1440 ultra wide) .. not planned for 4k .. but possible future.

My preference is toward Nvidia cards.

Thanks in advance.

  • Following as in a similar boat.

  • What's your budget? Do you want an all-in-one egpu solution or are you happy to get a separate enclosure and card?

    • Hello and thank you for replying ..

I've purchased the Core X (on sale last week) and am now looking for a video card.

Budget-wise.. none at the moment, trying to find the options to get the "most bang for the buck" without having to make an additional purchase/upgrade 3-4 years down the line (I understand it is hard to predict).

I've read the Core X is unable to handle the 4090 and the 3080ti would be pushing the upper (physical) limits of the case itself. (Something needs to "be bent" in order to fit the length of an 3080ti card but there would still be possibilities of it touching the sides.)

From reading, I'm guessing the 3080 is the max sized card I can buy that can fit, but haven't found reports on is the "boost" from a 3080 worth the price vs something like a 3070 .. (or even 3060ti).

I understand that using the video card in an eGPU would not give me the "best" rates due to the communication though TB .. which is why I am trying to find something (or someone) who can help solve that mystery.

And that's where I'm confused and lost on.

Also .. I know nothing of Radeon cards so any equivalents/comparison's would be appreciated.

      Thanks.

1440p 144hz won't be possible for most modern titles on an e-gpu

Essentially you'll need need either an RTX 3080 for Nvidia, or an RX 6800 XT for AMD, to drive a minimum of 60 FPS for modern titles after factoring in overhead: https://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/dominic-moa…

In terms of value, I'd recommend the RX 6800 XT, $200 cheaper for largely the same performance

        • Many thanks .. this was the (closest) to exact information I was looking.

I'm not looking for the full 144 FPS at 1440, a minimum of 60 was my "target" .. but that's probably because I've never experienced anything better than 60 FPS at the moment.

I lock the games frame rate on games to 60 because I hate how "jumpy" the game gets when it keep fluctuating during game on the current computer (that I'm trying to move away from).

Maybe I'll change my tune once I've experienced something better .. but if I get into that arena, I know I'll need to switch to a desktop (at that time) cause a laptop won't be able to handle it.

btw .. Happy New Year!!! =)

  • Download HWInfo64 and see what the specs of your Core X are as these are needed to see what the best option would be.

  • Hello and thank you for replying with advice ..

I'll download it and do that to post in the thread .. is there anything specific I should look for to screenshot? (Never used HWInfo64 before.)

    Thanks again.
