Any Tips for Replacing Old Garden/Hedge Edging?

Hi guys, I'm in a 14 year old house and some of the garden edging around the place is looking pretty dated, worn out, breaking up, or has sunk into the ground so the edging is not showing as much as I would like .. one photo as an example: https://imgur.com/fAyysqu

I'm thinking of digging up the existing wooden sleepers, getting some new 150 x 50mm Treated Pine Sleepers from Bunnings, and sticking these in. Current wooden sleepers are 120 x 40mm so these new Bunnings ones will be 3cm higher which is good.

I will run the new wooden sleepers just along the yellow section: https://imgur.com/Q2GU3L4

Do I need to stain these wooden sleepers from Bunnings? Any other tips or things I should do or keep in mind when undertaking this project?

FYI, I have zero DIY skills.

Thanks!

  • That curved area will be your only hurdle and will require multiple cuts.

No further treatment of sleepers required.

Get yourself a hand saw, eat your Weet bix, and you'll be good to go. Lay your wheelie bins on their sides to create a makeshift workbench to cut the sleepers.

A cheap post hole shovel will help make the existing cavity bigger to drop in the new larger pieces.

Most importantly have fun and gain some confidence to tackle new DIY projects.

  • Why timber? Steel is easier to curve. Bricks last a lifetime
    .

    • Aesthetics really. Steel can rust … may look into bricks though.

      • They make special steel for edging like this. It’s designed to rust the surface then that rust provides a protective coating and prevents it getting worse for a very long time.

  • I've used formboss redcore for my edging. More expensive than timber for sure but super easy to install and won't move once done. You'd just need a grinder / saw.
Can sometimes find people's leftovers for cheap on marketplace etc as you don't seem to need much.

    Good luck either way

    • Had seen that but didn't like the rust look.

      • Might be wrong but they could also have others that aren't just the rust?

  • It gonna be easy getting a curve out of a 50mm sleeper.

Otherwise, go play on YouTube to get some video on treated pine sleeper edging or retaining wall installation.

It’s not complex, just a little bit of hard work.

  • my eyes….that is hideous. please bulldoze and concrete this travesty immediately
