Cheap Electricity-GAs Supplier info

As the Electricity & Gas prices have gone up by more than 10% since last week, I feel its worth to start some discussion and share any information that could save OzBargain users a few $s.

Currently I am with Lumo Energy (http://www.lumoenergy.com.au/) and they are offering 15% discount on prompt payment on over all bill
- Discount is offered on usage as well as service charges
- No Contract
- Price matches if lower prices are found else where
- Provides cloes/Woolworths/safeway/myer/movie vouchers with atleaset 5% discount

I found this is pretty good at the moment. Their current rates for VIC are

Electricity:
Residential Single Rate ex GST inc GST
Supply charge (c/day) 81.70 89.870
Peak (c/kWh) 22.72 24.992

Residential Time Of Use ex GST inc GST
Supply charge (c/day) 82.52 90.772
Peak (c/kWh) 27.23 29.953
Off Peak (c/kWh) 13.01 14.311

GAS Charges: ex GST inc GST

More details can be found in their website for various states.
Allthough their site says 13% discount, on negotiation, they will offer upto15%.

Would like to know if there is any better supplier, so this information is helpful to all the users.

Please note I am neither an agent not gets any benefit from Lumo for giving this info. Purely sharing this info for the benefit of all users.

  • OP, there's no such thing as rates for VIC. VIC has 5 electricity distribution networks and (even more gas networks) at least three types of common residential tariffs in each network (not to mention loads more small business tariffs). This means each retailer has at least 15 sets of residential electricity rates available to Victorian customers.

Imo Lumo's electricity rates are pretty decent if you bargain and price match regularly. Lumo can offer up to 20% discounts for Victorian residential customers. They do have a habit of randomly putting prices up for different customers. This is different to most other retailers who have uniform increases to all their customers in one state. Lumo's gas prices are not at all impressive and there are many cheaper gas retailers. I've found Lumo to be particularly good for Victorian small business electricity users.

Best place to start comparing is http://www.yourchoice.vic.gov.au/. YourChoice is some times not up-to-date though, and may not have special offers that the retailers only offer selected customers or through brokers/agents. Once you've got the cheapest set of rates applicable to your tariff type from YourChoice, call up a few retailers/brokers and try to price match.

Also keep in mind that if you find a cheaper retailer now it will usually take about 4 weeks to 3 months to switch over. This means you will have to start shopping around again a few months after you change because most Vic retailers increase rates in January.

    • You are right…they are charging different prices for different customers in the same area.

A BIG NO NO TO LUMO

  • Anyone knows what is the cheapest price/ provider in SA
