What to Do with Late Fathers Old Mercedes?

I have my dad's old 350SE 1974 Merc sitting in the driveway. I had thoughts of restoring it, but I don’t have the time and I think my money is better off invested.

It hasn’t been started for years and is leaking water, would need a lot of work. Should I advertise it or just scrap it?

Advertise it… or maybe check some forums, I know a couple of ppl who love old mercs

Particularly if you are willing to give it away to someone willing to collect it

    PLEASE don't scrap it

I'm sure there are plenty of people who would absolutely take it for $$

If you're on Facebook, join some Mercedes groups and see what they reckon before you make any decision!

That 3.5 V8 was pretty sweet.

I'd advertise it on marketplaces for around $10k and be willing to negotiate. It can take a lot of time and money to get these old ladies safe for the road again.

If you feel bad for selling dad's car then just invest the money in other things he also enjoyed but also of value to you.

There's a nice example on carsales for $18k

Put it in an auction and dont bother wasting time with hagglers

I scrapped a W124, parts just too expensive. If it had been a W123 I would have held out for a buyer. A W116 is sadly scrap metal.

    • :-( I know what you mean but dam 124s are/were an excellent car

      • My dad passed down the W124, a fabulous car. I had an awesome Benz tech who counselled that they're machines and don't last forever. It got to 380K before needing a new fuel injection system, and the a/c had given up a few years earlier. Both repairs would have exceeded $4K.

  • You should be able to get more than scrap value (couple of hundred?) but depends how patient you’ll be waiting to sell particularly if the body is in decent condition. Could get a few grand.

As the more popular models get more expensive it’s entirely likely that the value will increase accordingly.

  • Send it to Grays, you might be surprised how much they can fetch…as long as you go in with little expectation.
