Apple Airtag - Battery Replacement. Anyone Succeeded ?

Just wondering if anyone succeeded in replacing the battery of Airtag?

I tried a couple of brands but they all had the child-safety coating.

Update for future preference:

Chevron (Woolworths) works.

  • What brands have you tried?

I just got the low battery warning and was just going to buy energizer - they have a coating?

    • Yup i tried the enegizer. They will not work.

      • Odd. I am 99% sure I used Energizer batteries the other month.
They had the annoying child resistant packaging (nothing a nice sharp xacto knife couldn't defeat).

I've only encountered Duracell with bitterant coatings

        • Yup the weird bit is the “old battery” in my airtag was a panasonic one with child safety logo + coating (i did lick it after being so annoyed).

I just replaced the CR2032 in mine with a Chevron brand from Woolies. Works fine

Awesome. On sale at the moment too! 4 for $6

    • Awesome. Thank you.

Does Airtag constantly show “low battery” warning with the Chevron?

      Thanks

      • I'm getting a 4pack this arvo and will let you know how I go

        • Got them. Replaced one. Perfect. Low battery warning gone and working as per normal.

The one that was in there from Apple was Panasonic so that is a safe bet also I would say.

          • @aurz: Thanks. Panasonic (from Woolies) not work. I tried it

  • buy a seiko battery that's made in japan

    • I also bought “maxwell” at a Japan’s shop (was in Japan last week). Airtag works with it but constantly show “low battery” warning.

  • Some people say use rubbing alcohol and give the battery a good wipe with it to get rid of the coating. You can get some Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) from bunnings

Already tried rubbing alcohol and sandpaper on the energizer. Didnt work.

Airtag recognised the battery after being sanded, but kept showing “low battery” warning

      • Oh snap… Was going to replace with energizer's in a couple of months but I'll stay away from them from your experience.

I replaced mine with Duracell a couple of weeks ago with no problems. Packet shows it was manufactured June 2020. Oops - just read that Duracell started selling coated batteries in September 2020. Must have had this packet sitting around for a couple of years.

  • I have successfully replaced mines with the “Panasonic CR2032 Lithium 3V Coin Battery CR-2032PG1BW” bought at Bing Lee for $2 each last month

  • Google says just use an eraser. Might take a bit of elbow grease. Make sure you scrub both sides I think both sides need to make good contact.

Also I don't think sand paper is a good idea, scratching up the metal tells me you will ruin the nice smooth contact areas so it will just end up being the same or become worse.
Alcohol also doesn't sound that good either. I would just give it a decent scrub on both sides with an eraser.

Also thank you so much for posting this I didn't know those coated batteries can cause problems in sensitive devices. e.g. I won't be putting any of those in my Casio watch for sure. Also probably a good idea to avoid them for sensitive medical devices etc.
