Dental Fillings Concerns and Costs for International Student

Hi all,

Foremost thanks for reading the post.

Recently my partner (who is on an international student visa) got checked by a dentist due to a tooth issue.

Without a dental cover, we ended up paying $500 for 2 tooth fillings (1 major + 1 minor + admin fee).

However, after 2 weeks the issue hasn't been resolved completely as she still gets some sensitivity while chewing hard or drinking cold/hot beverages.

Since we don't have the dental cover I am concerned about the cost and next steps.

Has anyone had a similar experience or can shed some light here, please?

Get in touch with the dentist and explain this to them. If this happened to me my dentist would fix it free of charge. Is the filling the right shape and size? Sometimes if the filling is higher than before, this can cause new issues, including sensitivity.

Unless it’s a different tooth that is causing the sensitivity than the ones they worked on…

    • Tooth sensitivity is very difficult to diagnose. It can be the bond used was not applied properly, the preparation was not perfect, the curing light may not have cured it properly, your teeth may just be sensitive, or everything is fine and you just have some temporary sensitivity.

But yes, best to speak to your dentist. They should assess and redo at no charge (in my opinion).

Ring the dentist and ask them to check their work. Which hopefully would be a free followup appt. Worst case you pay the same again. Dont put it off as if there is untreated infection you may head into tooth removal or root canal territory (the latter will be 10x as much as the filling)

You can get private medical insurance of course but that costs money too (and has limits).

100% agree, dont ignore problems that cant be fixed with fillings as they will probably need to be fixed with root canals which is much much worse ($5K)

  • If you have bad teeth, better joint extra cover from Bupa (only 3 or 4 hundress a year )
