Using Qantas FF Points for Unrelated People (Friends)

Hi all,

I have a mate's bucks this year which I'm booking domestic flights for. I thought I was smart with a plan to use my 200k Qantas FF points to book the flights. This would save everyone money and converts the points into cash for me (win win IMO). I only just realized that FF points are only meant for family members. I suppose I could lie and saying all of my friends are 1st cousins…

Has anyone booked for a group of friends before, any issues?

Sorry if this has been discussed, could find it in a search.

Be surprised if it was a worthwhile exercise once you factor in fees and charges Vs discount domestic fares

I had my account locked when booking 2 tickets under another name. They were for brother in law, but I had to 'explain' to get my account back. You may have to supply a stat dec.

I recently booked tickets (overseas holiday) for a number of people using QFF (classic rewards) points - for myself and members of my family but it also included one person not from our family (completely different surname, address, etc) and had no issues. It was all under the one booking - we had seats together, checked in together, etc

I think it'd be suss if everyone has a different name and it may result in you losing the points. I'd save the points for business-class flights. If you get to 318k that a business class around-the-world trip which would be worth way more. There'll probably be sales around Australia Day or Easter if the event is far enough out.

  • Pretty sure its a T&C violation. I wouldn't do it.

  • Thanks all, I'll steer clear.

Three of my grandparents come from three different continents and so I have aunties, uncles and cousins with wildly divergent names and who live in different corners of the globe. I’ve booked many flights for them over many years and never had a problem. In today’s multicultural Australia, who is Qantas to know who is related to who. They’re not the CIA. Just do it and enjoy your bucks night.

    • Ooft, that's what I was thinking. However, it's me and 10 mates, all the same age. But it's not like they get demographic details at booking. They would have to check us at the airport.

I'd say the chance of QFF picking on you is pretty slim if everyone is on the same booking and you're travelling with the group. After all, the rule is meant to catch those who, effectively, sell their points. & if you're all travelling together, they are less likely to be complete strangers to you.
