Anytime Fitness Won't Allow Me to Transfer Membership to Another Person

Long story short, I wanted to get out of my contract so I wanted to transfer my membership to another person.

Club manager got back to me and said they don't allow this.

The contract briefly says that they can do that, but just wondering if this had happened to anyone else before and were able to get out of it.

The clause:

"Your Membership may be transferred to another person who is not a
current Member but only if we agree, your account is up to date, and
the person you transfer to:"

If you are within your minimum term of your agreement, you will be required to make a 50% payout of the remaining balance for early cancellation. (Unless your reason to cancel is medical or relocation, conditions apply)

    Ouch… good ole gym memberships

    6 months @ $22/week = ~$286 payout for nothing

    • Moved to a different surburb and the local AF is kinda rundown, should've just went with the 6 months..

      • "local AF is kinda rundown". Please elaborate. Outside, inside decor, equipment broken etc.
        .

        • Only have one platform and it's cracked, so one side of the weight is always sunk down and get stuck in that position. Hope that makes sense.

@teeshiu: Not really, but sounds like "equipment broken" which would be a good reason to avoid
            .

Looks like op might have to get a doctor's cert for their bad back.

    keep asking until they agree

  • Threaten to cancel credit card that pays the membership, maybe then they will agree. Otherwise just cancel it and see how much money they can get out of a cancelled CC

Wouldn’t it just build up and then they could sell it to a debt collector?

      • Yep!

      • They already outsource this to Debit Success, I am sure they won't even have to sell it and have the templates ready to go.

Go to another AF for a month and it will become your home gym. Try your luck with the manager there?
Expect some clubs are better managed than others

      Might probably do that, thanks

      • If you are successful, please post an update. For the lolz. Gym Membership contracts are bollocks

Should be fine, I actually asked my local AF about the cancellation first and they were easy about it, because no one picked up my phone once at the home gym when I tried calling.

If you go to your new gym a few times in a row over the course of a month. Eventually the membership is transferred to them. You might be able to strike up a deal speaking to the "rundown" AF manager to see if there's anything they can do on their end

  • Do you want us to go have a chat with the club manager and talk him into agreeing?

  • This is exactly the reason I never rejoined Anytime fitness or any other big brand gym.

I was able to get out of my membership luckily long before pandemic. Kept asking the guy @ gym to freeze my account, So it was $0 as frozen, But only until the end date or until i got it transferred. Never I gave away that membership been glad to not join such contracts again.

and that time the get out of contract payment was 1 month or 4 weeks i think.

Write a complaint on social media (if it really isn't up to standard) and include that you have been denied cancellation as per the option in the contract.
Also I'd ask why you have been denied given the contract shows you can without further information on what situations it may be granted in.

If the equipment is broken its a safety issue, so find all the safety issues, take photos and ask them to fix. Maybe you can cancel on the basis that the product is not of a certain quality, and maybe go to small claims to get a month or two of fees back - they will realise that its not worth it and cancel it.
