      Save your money and just eat nutritious whole foods. Multis are a waste of money since they barely scratch the surface of meeting the RDAs of most vitamins and minerals.

    Just a friendly reminder that unless you meet some very specific conditions (e.g. pregnant or post-surgery) or have consulted with your GP, daily multivitamins are a waste of money. If you think you have a vitamin deficiency, see a doctor. Its boring but the best thing you can do to improve your health is eat a balanced diet and exercise often. Taking these will not make you 'healthier'.

      Isn't that subjective? This whole topic is grey and can't be pidgeon holed into a polarised yes/no argument. There have been RCTs on the use of multi vitamins or suppliments that found little benefit unless "dietary intake is inadequate" but the scope of the RCT are limited.

      For example, low levels of certain vitamins, minerals etc may be fine and not observed over the duration of the study, but over time, they can impact your health, or more correctly hamper the ability of the body to repair or function to it's best.

      Immune system function is an example. It's more effective with reasonable levels of C, D, Zinc, Magnesium etc. A multi will give an all round low level base of each of these on a daily basis. Diet is clearly important but can we ensure it meets our full needs on a constant basis? It might need it one day, then not the next, and the half life of these 'chemicals' (for want of a better term) may mean that constant supplementation even at a low blood concentration is beneficial.

      Again, I don't think we should poo hoo the industry and make blanket statements as even the RCTs are only accurate in the limited frame on the actual study.

      As a general concept, they can't hurt and suppliments diet. If someone has the resources then I'd say go for it. If all you do is urinate it out then so be, but logic says it's a semi insurance policy that can help the body in certain situations.

      And don't get me started on appropriate levels of essential amino acids … Our modern high carb diets worry me about whether people are getting their 'WHO' recommended daily amounts. Again in this case, supplementation is a valuable insurance policy for essential function, and if you have the resources, then go for it.

      And lastly, yes see your doc, and yes they are a resource, but at sometimes best a GP may have done one lecture on all of this, so buyer beware, and seek a range of credibly sourced info, and decide as a team.
