Import Nest Doorbell Wired (2nd Generation) to Aus

Has anyone yet imported the Nest 2nd Generation wires doorbell to Australia yet? I’m thinking of doing it but wanted to see if there are any connection or installation issues I should be aware of before purchasing?

  • I was thinking of doing this through Amazon US. Works out to be about $300AUD + a local transformer (Jaycar sell ones that would suit)

    • Can you please link to the transformer @swhitmore ?

      • Please confirm this yourself in case I give the wrong information, but according to this website https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9247132 you need a power supply that outputs 16 to 24 V AC (10 to 40 VA)

Something like this should work https://www.jaycar.com.au/24vac-1a-unregulated-power-supply-…

        • I just noticed that the page I like refers to the wired 2nd gen in Australia requiring an electrician. Could be a sign that they may bring it here.

Ask a pro to install your Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen).Important: In Europe and Australia, you’ll need to have a licensed electrician install a new transformer before installing the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen). If you live in the US or Canada, you might not need a new transformer, but if you do, we recommend that a licensed electrician install it for you

@swhitmore: I mean that's if you're wiring to the mains voltage with a transformer like this. amazon.com.au/Everyday-Door-Bell-Chime-Transformer/dp/B019BW9VZ2?ref_=Oct_d_obs_d_5159390051&pd_rd_w=1MYDH&content-id=amzn1.sym.4f4a507e-3ae2-42d4-9a01-19966bee8b9b&pf_rd_p=4f4a507e-3ae2-42d4-9a01-19966bee8b9b&pf_rd_r=GFW2BN6XAGE8V4JTM8BK&pd_rd_wg=G2YKC&pd_rd_r=32a2d794-1cbf-41ae-986c-fcaacfbc6553&pd_rd_i=B019BW9VZ2

I have the jaycar transformer you've posted above and it works well with the Nest Doorbell (battery) which has pretty much the same power requirements. Google provides a small connector which simply grabs onto the bare ends which can then be easily installed onto the doorbell https://imgur.com/a/apzYSlB

            • @Charlieeee: Yes, that's basically the same thing without the plug. I would suggest using the power supply rather then just a transformer if you're not comfortable working with electrical services.

I was just quoting moreso because of the reference to the 2nd gen in Australia

              • @swhitmore: I currently have no doorbell but several Google Homes which apparently double as the chime - though I’m hoping there’s no delay?

Thoughts on if I need a seperate chime? If so and I have an electrician installing what power supply/transformer/chime combo do I need?
                @swhitmore @Charlieeee

@captaint: I have google speakers and multiple nest wifi points which double as speakers. There's an option in the settings of the doorbell which allow you to choose between your google speakers or a chime if your house already has one. There's about a 1 second delay in my experience from when the doorbell is pressed to when the speakers go off. https://imgur.com/a/QQFxbTW

                  • @Charlieeee: Do you know the difference between "Ring indoor chime" and "Have an electronic chime"?

                    My guess is:
"Ring indoor chime" = mechnical chime
"Have an electronic chime"? = you can connect any type of plug in style chime or has to be compatible like that 3rd party one I linked below?

@Charlieeee: I have a Hub Maxx that I'm hoping works well with the video announcements

    • @swhitmore did you end up getting one of these installed? Getting close to pulling the trigger too but curious if all the features will work if it's used in a region where it's not sold…

Hi mate, yes I did from Amazon US. Working great. I'm using the Nest Aware trial and all features seem to me working (face/parcel detection, history, etc.)

        • Legend, thanks!

        • G'day @swhitmore, thanks a lot for confirming it works for you, I'm in a similar boat in terms of looking to import one. Did you end up using the transformer you linked above, and did you use the provided chime connector/puck to wire it up? (I don't have an existing chime so would be looking to wire it up directly to the transformer without the chime puck but I've seen some conflicting reports as to whether this is a good idea or not — from what I can see it sounds as though it will be fine as long as I disable the "use existing chime" option in the app). Cheers mate.

          • @sjwj: Hi mate, yep I used the transformer from Jaycar. I don't use the chime sorry, I just let the door announcements go to my Google Home Hub and Mini's.

            Working great 👍

        • I note that this post is a few months old, but I was wondering if you are getting full functionality with Nest Aware. Were there any gremlins?

    • Hi. I noted that you succeeded in working the doorbell with Nest Aware trial. Have you been able to operate this long term and have there been any issues?

  • This got my hopes up. I was hoping there was a sign of local availability.
What do we think are the chances one will be packaged up for AU?

    • Google support provided me with the following generic response: “thanks for your interest in our products. The Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) is currently available in the US and Canada. We don't have news to share about the other countries Google Nest products will become available in. You can follow us on social media or keep an eye on our Google Store for news and updates: https://goo.gle/2VuR7kY”

I’m sure it will come @jwp but I’m over waiting for it and keen to know if I’ll hit any functionality or voltage roadblocks if I import it.

Voltage wouldn't be an issue (power is power), but I'm not sure about the functionality, especially the cloud stuff.

  • Other than being smaller and coming with ability to connect up to mechanical chime, is there really a need to get the wired version?

From what I can see from the specs, they look almost identical.

OP, if you need a separate chime it seems a 3rd part is selling a chime to go with the new wired version https://9to5google.com/2022/12/02/nest-doorbell-chime/

    • Imo the 24/7 recording is what would get me across the line. (The HDR would be nice too)
I have the gen 2 battery and it's perfectly fine but occasionally it misses some of my cats funny antics in it's 30sec record limit or whatever it is. I have quite a few cameras and nest aware plus and have enjoyed being able to check recordings outside detected events.

Any updates on this? Any plans for it to land in Australia?

  • If you go read their online info you can quickly work out if your current wired doorbell will work with it.
For me it was a matter of measuring the voltage at the doorbell which was 25v, close enough to googles acceptable range, and worked. Install was easy, just two wires unscrewed from the old doorbell and screwed back into the nest device. It and the guide are well done.

There is a second little noisemaker with 2 wires and a wire-tap thing on the end of each which you should wire to your existing doorbell noisemaker by clicking the taps over the existing wires. This then ensures there is a local noise as well. There is a second or two delay between button press and noise including through my Google homes, speakers (etc)

Facial recognition isnt perfect but is pretty good.

Phone is pretty quick too for a notification.

It was worth doing for sure - just check your doorbell voltage etc as per their online guides.

  • Hi @Charlieeee and @swhitmore,
I just got the wired Google Nest Gen 2 doorbell and the Jaycar transformer mentioned in this thread (thanks for the tips!)

I've got an electrician connecting this for me, but he is not sure if we have to go through a mechanical chime (we don't have one installed in our house)

Can someone please confirm if you can just connect the transformer wires directly to the Google doorbell?

I assume that in that case you don't need to use the chime puck that comes with the doorbell?

    Thanks in advance

@vedranio Hey mate, yep you can connect directly. That's what I have done. I don't use the chime. I get the announcement on my Google Home Hubs

      • Awesome, thank you @swhitmore

  • Hey wondering if you have the link to the wired doorbell. Keen to get one from Amazon US too.

  • Hi @All and @swhitmore
i'm new here and noticed this thread. wondering if you or anybody can share whether you have been successful in using the Nest subscription without any issues in Australia? Keen to know if there were any issues that came about as i noted that the trail seemed ok? Would love some insight

    • I did the trial and it worked fine. I cancelled it however, as I didn't see much benefit from it. The 2nd gen US wired version has been working flawlessly.

  • that's awesome. I was keen on the 24/7 recording. Thanks for getting back to me!
